Sony has patented touchscreen and modular controller ideas, including concepts for movable virtual controls and a detachable screen. That makes the technology a real area of PlayStation-related design exploration—not a confirmed new DualSense. Sony has not announced a touchscreen PS5 controller, named a release platform, or given a price or launch date.

Two separate 2026 developments are behind much of the current discussion: an earlier touchscreen-control concept covered in February reporting and a modular-controller patent application published July 16. They should not be treated as one confirmed product or as proof that a new controller is imminent.

What Sony’s controller patents describe

Movable virtual controls

A Sony patent, US11925856B2, describes a controller with modular input options and a touchscreen implementation. Virtual controls could include a D-pad, joystick, or action buttons, and the patent discusses moving those controls around the screen. It also identifies accommodating players with disabilities as a potential use. This is an issued patent describing possible designs, not a product announcement.

Separately, February 2026 coverage discussed a Sony patent concept in which touchscreen areas could display controls and let players choose their positions. The reporting framed it as a configurable alternative to fixed button placement, but it does not establish that Sony plans to replace physical controls. Tech Times’ February 2026 report provides an overview of that concept.

A modular controller with a detachable screen

A different U.S. patent application, identified in reporting as US20260199776A1, was published July 16, 2026. Coverage describes a modular controller with a touchscreen interface, detachable screen, magnetic components, and a rotating navigation control. Those details belong to the application discussed in that reporting; they do not confirm that it is the same design as the earlier movable-controls concept. MP1st’s coverage outlines the reported features.

A patent can protect a possible approach without committing its owner to manufacture it. Patent drawings and descriptions are not final specifications, so they cannot establish how a retail controller would look or work.

What a touchscreen could do

Depending on the design and software support, a screen could supplement physical controls rather than replace them. Possible uses suggested by the patent concepts and reporting include:

  • Saving different layouts for different players, games, or hand positions.
  • Offering alternate or simplified control arrangements, including larger virtual targets.
  • Displaying contextual commands, system menus, or notifications.
  • Working alongside detachable or repositionable physical modules.

These are possible functions, not confirmed features of a forthcoming PlayStation controller. A useful implementation would also need system software and developer support, especially for game-specific layouts and saved profiles.

Could it be the next PS5 controller?

There is no verified platform assignment for the reported designs. A future PS5 accessory is one possibility, but Sony has not announced one or confirmed compatibility. A controller for a future console, a portable or remote-play device, an accessibility-focused accessory, or a concept that never reaches consumers are also possibilities—not established plans.

It is particularly premature to label the modular application a PS6 controller. The filing does not confirm PS6 hardware, a launch accessory, or a release timetable. Likewise, illustrations or descriptions that emphasize touch controls do not prove the finished product would be “buttonless.” It could retain sticks, triggers, or physical modules while adding a screen.

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

If you need a controller now, choose from products Sony actually sells rather than waiting on a patent. The standard DualSense remains the conventional PS5 option; the DualSense Edge is Sony’s premium controller with physical customization options; and the PlayStation Access controller is an existing accessibility-focused alternative. None is a confirmed stand-in for the patented touchscreen designs.

The accessibility opportunity—and its limits

Configurable control placement could help some players put commands within easier reach, choose an arrangement that suits a particular grip, or use a simpler set of inputs. Sony’s US11925856B2 patent explicitly discusses accessibility in connection with movable controls. That is a meaningful use case, but a touchscreen is not automatically accessible to everyone.

Players who depend on tactile landmarks may find flat controls harder to locate without looking. Visual targets can be difficult for some low-vision players, while tremors or unintended contact can make touch input unreliable. A configurable screen could complement physical options; it would not make those options unnecessary. Sony’s current Access controller is a real product designed around flexible physical input, and its existence does not mean the patent is an announced successor.

What it could improve over a DualSense—and what could get worse

The DualSense already uses a touchpad alongside conventional controls. Sony’s product page is the current reference for its features; the touchscreen patents do not establish that a screen would replace the touchpad or preserve every existing feature.

Potential benefit Trade-off or unresolved question
Move or resize virtual controls for a player or game. Can players find and press them reliably without looking?
Show contextual commands or system information. Would notifications distract players, interrupt play, or expose private information?
Combine digital layouts with modular physical inputs. How durable would screen connectors and attachments be, and could damaged parts be replaced?
Offer another way to customize input. Would developers support it consistently, including in existing games?
Put more functions on the controller surface. A screen and modular hardware could add power use, cost, complexity, and repair concerns; Sony has not published battery or price specifications.

Physical buttons offer a fixed location, mechanical travel, and tactile feedback that support blind operation and muscle memory. A touch surface may be less dependable for fast gameplay if players cannot distinguish controls by feel. Accidental contact from a resting finger or changing grip is another design challenge. The available descriptions do not establish details such as palm rejection, touch locking, pressure thresholds, or haptic confirmation.

Even a technically capable screen would have limited value if games treated it only as a menu or if layouts were supported inconsistently. Before such a controller could be judged as a replacement, Sony would need to explain compatibility, software support, physical fallback controls, and what happens if the screen or a detachable module fails.

What Sony has—and has not—confirmed

Sony’s Virtual Patent Marking page lists patents associated with PlayStation products, including PS5 and DualSense. It does not announce a touchscreen controller, and Sony notes that the listing may not be comprehensive and that additional patents may be pending.

  • Established: Sony has patented controller concepts involving modular inputs and touchscreen-based movable controls, and a separate 2026 application is reported to describe a modular touchscreen design.
  • Not established: A product name, final design, release date, price, battery life, screen specifications, or PS5 compatibility.
  • Not established: That the concepts are one device, that physical controls will be removed, or that the design is intended for PS6 or a handheld.
  • Not guaranteed: Commercial release. A patent or application alone is not evidence that a consumer product will ship.

Until PlayStation announces concrete product details through official channels, this is patent news rather than new-controller product news. Sony’s patent filings show interest in more customizable and modular input, with potential accessibility applications; they do not show that PS5 owners should expect a touchscreen DualSense.
