Does Comanche 4 Run on Windows 11? What Players Have Reported

Steam does not list Windows 11 for Comanche 4. One community guide describes a Windows 10 x64 dgVoodoo2 setup, but reports are mixed and do not confirm Windows 11 compatibility.

There is no confirmed evidence here that Comanche 4 runs reliably on Windows 11. Steam lists Windows 2000, XP and Vista—not Windows 11—and the available community setup report covers Windows 10 x64, with mixed results. Treat Windows 11 compatibility as unverified rather than guaranteed.

What Steam says about compatibility

Steam’s Comanche 4 listing identifies the game as a NovaLogic release from November 15, 2001, and lists Windows 2000, XP and Vista. Windows 11 is not listed, so the store page does not certify that the game works on a current Windows system.

The listing’s legacy minimum requirements are a Pentium II 450 MHz or better, 128 MB of memory, Direct3D graphics with 16 MB or better, DirectX 8.0 or higher, 250 MB of free disk space and DirectX-compliant sound. These are the requirements shown for the older supported Windows versions, not evidence of Windows 11 compatibility.

The game includes six single-player campaigns and multiplayer, according to the Steam listing. That description does not establish whether either mode works on Windows 11.

What the Windows 10 report does—and does not—show

A Steam community guide by Zeithri describes a Windows 10 x64 setup attempt dated June 20, 2023. The author’s method uses dgVoodoo2: selected wrapper and configuration files are placed in the Comanche 4 game folder, then graphics and resolution options are configured.

This is one player’s reported Windows 10 method, not a verified Windows 11 fix. The guide page also includes a commenter who says the steps did not get the game to start and mentions a DirectPlay prompt. That makes the method an avenue to investigate, not a guaranteed solution.

If you want to try it on Windows 11

  1. Check the edition and source of your game installation, then install it normally. The community guide is written around a particular setup and does not establish that every edition behaves the same way.
  2. Read the guide’s instructions before changing files. It describes copying selected dgVoodoo2 files and its configuration into the game’s main folder, then adjusting graphics settings.
  3. Record what happens: whether the game fails to launch, asks about DirectPlay, or starts but has rendering problems. Note your Windows 11 version/build, game edition and wrapper configuration so another player can compare like with like.
  4. If the game still will not launch, do not assume that the listed Windows 10 steps apply to Windows 11 or that a particular prompt proves the wrapper is configured incorrectly. The guide itself has a report of an unsuccessful attempt.

No cited source confirms reliable operation on a current Windows 11 build, identifies a working Windows 11 configuration, or compares results across Windows 11 editions and hardware. A successful result on one machine would be useful firsthand evidence, but would not by itself establish broad compatibility.

Controls are separate from compatibility

Steam says Comanche 4 supports keyboard and mouse, with joystick, throttle and pedal controls as an alternative for players who prefer simulator-style input. Those peripherals are optional; they do not solve operating-system or launch problems.
