In Old School RuneScape, ordinary fly-fishing for salmon and trout is generally faster for Fishing XP per hour than catching lobsters, even though each lobster catch awards more XP. The distinction is between XP per catch and catches per hour.
Salmon or lobster: which gives more Fishing XP per hour?
Broad training-guide estimates put salmon-and-trout fly fishing at about 30,000–50,000 Fishing XP per hour, compared with about 20,000–30,000 XP per hour for lobster fishing. These are estimates from a free-to-play training guide, not a controlled comparison at matched levels or identical setups, so your results may differ. The guide’s rates should be treated as a general indication, not a promise.
Why lobsters award more XP per catch
The Old School RuneScape Wiki lists salmon at Fishing level 30 for 70 Fishing XP per catch, while lobsters require level 40 and award 90 XP per catch. Those mechanics explain why lobster can look better if you compare only a single catch; they do not establish the faster hourly method. The Fishing skill page lists the catch requirements and XP values.
| Method | Fishing level | XP per catch | Equipment and spot | Broad guide estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salmon (usually caught alongside trout) | 30 | 70 | Fly fishing rod and feathers at a lure spot | About 30,000–50,000 XP per hour for salmon/trout fly fishing |
| Lobster | 40 | 90 | Lobster pot at a cage spot | About 20,000–30,000 XP per hour |
Level and XP values are listed by the Old School RuneScape Wiki; hourly ranges come from the free-to-play training guide cited above and are broad estimates, not matched test results.

What changes your actual XP rate?
- Fishing level: The guide’s hourly ranges do not specify a single level for both methods. Catch rates and your resulting XP per hour depend on your account’s level.
- Banking or dropping: Banking catches takes time; dropping them instead can change the rate. The quoted ranges do not establish one shared banking or dropping setup.
- Access and method: Salmon fly fishing uses a rod and feathers, while lobster fishing uses a pot. Check that you have the required tool and are at the corresponding fishing spot.
What if you are a member?
Members can consider Barbarian Fishing: it offers leaping salmon from Fishing level 58, but it is a distinct method rather than ordinary fly fishing. It requires the Barbarian Training unlock and additional Strength and Agility requirements; it can also award Strength and Agility XP. Those extra skill benefits may make it appealing, but they should not be confused with the standard salmon-versus-lobster rate estimates. The Barbarian Fishing guide describes the method and unlocks.

Which should you choose?
- For the standard comparison focused on Fishing XP per hour, choose salmon/trout fly fishing as the general faster option.
- Choose lobsters if the higher XP per catch or the fish themselves better suit your current goals; do not infer a higher hourly rate from the catch XP alone.
- If you are a member with the relevant unlocks and requirements, assess Barbarian Fishing separately for its leaping salmon and side-skill XP.
