That is evidence of visibility and engagement—not proof that the game permanently changed how audiences understand Chinese culture.
What award counts cannot tell us
An award is a judgment made under a particular category’s rules. Sales, simultaneous players, and written reviews measure different things, contributed by different groups over different periods. None is a complete measure of a game’s importance.

For Black Myth: Wukong, the strongest case for importance is not that awards are irrelevant. It is that the awards sit alongside exceptional commercial reach and an international encounter with a story rooted in Chinese literature.
The launch reached an unusually large audience
Guinness World Records reported that Black Myth: Wukong had sold 20 million copies by 20 September 2024, within its first month. Guinness separately records more than 2.2 million concurrent Steam players on launch day. The first figure counts copies sold by a date; the second is a platform-specific peak of simultaneous users. An earlier snapshot illustrates the speed of the launch, but uses a different date and reporting scope. A Shenzhen government report published 22 August 2024 said that more than one million players had joined in the first hour and that, by the end of launch day, 4.5 million copies had been sold across Steam, WeGame, Epic Games, and PlayStation, generating more than 1.5 billion yuan in revenue. These numbers make the game’s visibility difficult to dismiss. They do not show that every buyer finished it, recognized its references, or came away with the same understanding. Reach is the scale of the encounter, not its uniform result.

What the game carried across borders
A story with deep literary roots
Developed by Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game inspired by Journey to the West, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. Game Science founder and game director Feng Ji described the novel as the game’s inspiration and its cultural heritage as part of the creative foundation. That is the developer’s account of intention, rather than an independent assessment of what players took from the game. PlayStation Partner Awards announcement, 3 December 2024
The story’s familiar place in Chinese literary culture gave the game material that many international players might not previously have encountered through a major action game. The setting and characters could invite players to seek context, compare interpretations, or discuss what they were seeing. The opportunity for that exchange is itself significant, even when understanding is incomplete.

Place translated into a visual world
Shenzhen Government Online reported that Game Science spent years capturing cultural and historical sites and used real-world scanning to bring digital models of buildings, statues, and sculptures into Unreal Engine 5. This helps explain how cultural heritage informed the game’s visual environment: it was not only a retelling of a classic story, but also a world shaped by references to physical places and objects. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, responding to a question about the game, said: “I do not know much about video games, but thank you for drawing my attention to this game. The name of this game suggests that it is inspired by the Chinese classic novel ‘Journey to the West.’ I think this speaks to the appeal of the Chinese culture.” Her remark is a government spokesperson’s observation about cultural appeal, not evidence of a measured effect on audiences. Players engaged with the culture, but not always with ease
A 2025 study in Humanities and Social Science Research analyzed 18,916 English-language Steam reviews. It identified three broad themes: players’ focus on combat and difficulty; admiration for Chinese cultural elements alongside interpretive confusion; and social interaction and user-generated content as ways players negotiated meaning. The findings make the impact argument more persuasive because they show more than attention alone: at least within this sample, cultural material prompted responses and discussion. They also put a limit on the claim. Admiration is not the same as comprehension, and confusion is not proof that the game failed to communicate. The study covers English-language Steam reviews, not all players or platforms, and notes that cross-cultural communication outcomes remain underexplored.

So the defensible conclusion is measured: the game created exceptional visibility and opportunities for cultural engagement. The available evidence does not establish that it produced a consistent or lasting change in how players understand Chinese culture.
The awards matter—but their criteria matter too
Black Myth: Wukong did receive major recognition. The PlayStation Partner Awards announcement lists it as a 2024 Grand Award recipient. That award went to the top three Japan/Asia-developed titles by worldwide sales during October 2023–September 2024; it is not a claim that the game was the single highest-selling title. The NUS East Asian Institute’s 2026 background brief reports that the game also won Best Action Game and Players’ Voice at The Game Awards 2024. It distinguishes jury-influenced categories from Players’ Voice, which is fully fan-voted. These awards recognize achievement through different processes; they cannot be collapsed into a single verdict about cultural reach. NUS East Asian Institute, 2026
Awards capture a moment of recognition under specific rules. Sales and concurrency record scale, and review research offers a bounded view of reception. For this game, the latter measures make the bigger point: Black Myth: Wukong became a major international point of contact with Chinese mythology, even though the evidence cannot turn that contact into a claim of universal or lasting cultural change.
