Game Science’s Black Myth: Zhong Kui footage is worth watching as an early glimpse of the game—not as proof of how the finished release will look or run. The official site dates its 15-minute gameplay demo to August 20, 2026, and says it shows protagonist combat and selected story scenes. Its description identifies the video as work-in-progress footage captured at 21:9 and warns that the final release may differ.
Which Black Myth: Zhong Kui video is this?
The phrase “in-engine trailer” can refer to different videos in the project’s history. The August 20, 2026 video currently linked from the official Black Myth: Zhong Kui page is titled “15 Minutes Gameplay Trailer.” That is the specific footage discussed here; it should not be conflated with the earlier reveal or the shorter in-engine special.
| Video | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Reveal teaser | Gamescom ONL 2025 | A CG teaser. At the time, the game was in early development and no in-game footage was available, as reported by GameSpot. |
| Chinese New Year special | February 10, 2026 | An in-engine special, according to the official project page. |
| “15 Minutes Gameplay Trailer” | August 20, 2026 | A gameplay demo offering an early look at protagonist combat and selected story scenes. The official description calls it work-in-progress footage captured at 21:9. |
The date and format matter: a CG reveal, an in-engine short, and a gameplay demo do not establish the same things about a game. The official chronology is on the developer’s page, and the demo’s footage caveat appears in its official video description.
What does the gameplay trailer show?
Game Science describes the 15-minute video as a first look at protagonist combat and selected story scenes, not a complete presentation of the game’s plot, systems, or scope. It is enough to introduce the kind of material the studio is exploring, but not to settle how the full game will play or how its mechanics fit together.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is described by Game Science as a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and folklore, with Zhong Kui as its primary creative inspiration. The studio says it is exploring distinctive gameplay for the new protagonist and differentiated storytelling, while noting that it cannot yet provide more detail about the story and gameplay in its FAQ.
Is the trailer in engine—and what can it prove?
The project has an officially identified in-engine special from February 10, 2026, while the later August video is officially labeled a gameplay trailer. Those labels distinguish the videos, but neither makes the footage a guarantee of the final game’s image quality or performance. The video description says it was captured from a work-in-progress build at a 21:9 aspect ratio; that is a capture-format detail, not a confirmed resolution, frame rate, hardware specification, or performance target.

Game Science’s FAQ puts the limitation plainly: “A quick heads-up: The promotional footage we’re sharing this early may naturally differ from the final release; some of what we’re exploring is still experimental.” The footage can offer an impression of the project at that point in development, but it cannot establish which visual or gameplay elements will ship unchanged. The FAQ and the video description both make that distinction.
Who is Zhong Kui in the game’s source material?
Game Science presents Zhong Kui through legend rather than a documented biography: its official page says there are no official historical records of him. The familiar account involving a scholar, the imperial examination, death, and the quelling of demons belongs to folklore as framed by the developer—not to a verified historical record. The character’s cultural and mythological roots are the stated inspiration for the game.

When is Black Myth: Zhong Kui coming out, and where?
The official FAQ gives no release date. It says the game will be released when it is good enough to impress the studio, so a specific year or launch window should not be assumed. Game Science’s current platform wording is “PC and major consoles”; it says the final platform list will be announced before release. No more specific console claim is established by that wording.
