Black Myth: Wukong sold 10 million copies across all platforms within three days of its 20 August 2024 launch, according to an announcement by developer Game Science. Guinness World Records later recorded 20 million units sold by 20 September 2024, in its category for the fastest-selling videogame based on a classic novel. Those dated milestones show an extraordinary launch; they do not establish the game’s current lifetime sales or an exact all-time rank.
What sales milestones are documented?
| Milestone | What was reported | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Three days after launch | 10 million copies sold across all platforms, with data current to 21:00 Beijing time on 23 August 2024. | Game Science announcement reproduced by Gematsu. The three-day interval is calculated from the 20 August launch date. |
| First month | 20 million units sold by 20 September 2024. | Guinness World Records, for its record category “Fastest-selling videogame based on a classic novel.” |
The first figure is a developer-announced, all-platform milestone; the second is Guinness’s dated record entry. Neither should be presented as a current lifetime total.

What does “one of the fastest-selling games” mean here?
The most precisely supported description is that Guinness World Records recognized Black Myth: Wukong as the fastest-selling videogame based on a classic novel, recording 20 million units in its first month. Guinness describes the game as an action role-playing game based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West.
That category-specific record is not the same as a definitive position among every game ever released. An all-games ranking would need to specify its sales window, platform coverage and what counts as a unit, as well as account for records that may change. The documented figures support an exceptional launch, not a precise current all-time rank.

How do the other launch figures compare with sales?
Guinness World Records reported that more than 2.2 million people played concurrently on Steam on release day. That is a simultaneous-player count on one platform, not a number of copies sold.
Guinness, citing Niko, also reported that 93% of Steam reviews were in simplified Chinese and that 82% of launch-day Steam traffic came from East Asia. These figures describe review language and traffic origin; they are not a breakdown of sales by language, country or region, and they do not by themselves explain why the game sold so well.

How does its pace compare with other major releases?
Contemporaneous figures cited by PC Gamer give a sense of scale, but the time windows differ. These milestones do not form a like-for-like ranking.
| Game | Reported sales milestone | Time window in PC Gamer’s 23 August 2024 comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | 15 million | Three months |
| Elden Ring | 13 million | One month |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 13.7 million | One month |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | More than 20 million | Five months |
| Helldivers 2 | 12 million | Three months |
Because those totals cover different periods, they show how large the reported milestones were, not which game sold fastest on a standardized basis.

What can be said about its audience?
The reported simplified-Chinese review share and East Asian traffic share point to a strong presence in those measures on Steam at launch. They do not establish regional sales shares or a cause for the sales result. The available figures here do not provide a current unit-sales total or a definitive all-time ranking.
