Why is it called the lowest-rated nominee ever?
On November 19, 2024, Gamereactor reported that the game’s 81 Metacritic score was the lowest among Game of the Year nominees at that time. A later retrospective account also describes it as the lowest-scoring nominee in the show’s history. Those reports support the headline’s substance, but the superlative is a historical comparison of critic aggregates—not an official Game Awards statistic. The available sources do not provide a complete table of every nominee’s dated Metascore, so the all-time claim is best attributed rather than presented as a result certified by the awards themselves.

What the comparison does—and doesn’t—tell you
- It compares critic aggregates: the evidence concerns Metacritic’s Metascore, not player ratings, sales, or an OpenCritic average.
- It depends on the snapshot: a dynamic aggregator score may change, and a comparison made in November 2024 is not necessarily identical to a current comparison.
- It does not settle whether the nomination was deserved: a relative score position describes one measure of critical reception; it does not establish an objective threshold for a nomination.
How did Black Myth: Wukong fare at the ceremony?
Nomination and victory are separate outcomes. Astro Bot won the 2024 Game of the Year award. The Game Awards’ official 2024 rewind lists Black Myth: Wukong as the winner of Best Action Game and Players’ Voice, but not Game of the Year.
