Is Borderlands 2 free on Steam?
Not through the June 2025 giveaway: that promotion is over. 2K announced it on June 5 and said the Borderlands 2 giveaway would end June 8, 2025, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. The announcement separately listed a Borderlands franchise sale through June 18 at 10 a.m. PT; the sale dates were not the giveaway dates. See 2K’s Steam announcement.
Steamworks describes Free to Keep as a time-limited promotion that lets a player acquire a permanent game license at no cost. That is different from Free to Play, where a game is permanently free to acquire, and a Free Weekend, which provides temporary access. If you claimed Borderlands 2 during the Free-to-Keep window, the license is permanent; if you did not, the expired promotion does not make the game free now. Steamworks explains the distinction in its Free Promotions documentation.
What is Borderlands 2’s current Steam review rating?
Steam’s Borderlands 2 store page currently reports Very Positive for both overall English reviews and recent reviews. It also displays a notice that Steam detected one or more periods of off-topic review activity. Reviews from those periods are excluded from the review score by default. That page describes Borderlands 2, not every game in the series. It does not support the claim that the entire franchise currently has a Mostly Negative rating. A franchise-wide rating claim needs dated evidence covering the specific titles being discussed, rather than a single game’s store page or a reaction at one point in time.
Did the Borderlands EULA change?
Steam’s Borderlands 2 page lists an agreement to a third-party EULA. That establishes that an agreement is required, but the available official information does not show the exact wording of any recent change, its effective date, what data is collected or how it may be used, or whether the same terms apply to every Borderlands title.

For those reasons, claims that the EULA makes the game spyware, permits data sales, or applies identically across the franchise are not established by the cited store-page information. To verify a specific change, compare authoritative versions of the relevant EULA and identify the game and date each version covers.
What kind of game is Borderlands 2?
Steam categorizes Borderlands 2 as an action and role-playing game and describes its loot-focused shooter gameplay. The store page lists four playable characters, single-player and co-op features, and a third-party SHiFT account requirement. Check the listing for current availability and account requirements, which can change.

How large is the Borderlands series?
In its 2025 investor presentation, publisher Take-Two Interactive reported that Borderlands 2 had sold over 30 million units and that the franchise had sold over 99 million units. These are publisher-reported cumulative figures, not independent sales audits. They provide context for the game’s reach, but do not establish a current franchise-wide review rating.
