Gearbox showed four pieces of Borderlands 4 concept art at PAX West in 2024, offering a glimpse of possible environments and the game’s visual direction—not a confirmed map or location list. Art director Adam May described the look as “high tech but lo-fi,” with more color and technology than previous games. Later official reveals named the new planet Kairos and its ruler, the Timekeeper, but did not identify the early images as specific final-game locations.
What the 2024 concept art revealed
At Gearbox’s PAX West Main Theatre Show, the studio presented four concept-art pieces. GameSpot described imagery that included sci-fi cityscapes, a hazy interior and a cliffside structure. The presentation focused more on the art team’s approach than on identifying the setting or the places depicted. Gearbox did not confirm that any image represented a final location in the game. GameSpot’s report on the PAX West reveal has the original context.
A “high tech but lo-fi” direction
Art director Adam May called the intended aesthetic “high tech but lo-fi.” He said it created opportunities for technology, weapons, characters and the world, and pointed to digital projections, more color and more technology as ways to make the setting feel new. May also cautioned that Gearbox could not say much at the time. These comments describe an art direction, not a checklist of finished features or a guarantee that each concept image appears unchanged in the released game.
What later reveals confirmed about Kairos
Gearbox and publisher 2K supplied the setting and story details after the concept-art presentation. In its December 2024 announcement, 2K introduced Kairos and the Timekeeper, a dictator whose rule is threatened by a world-altering catastrophe. In an April 2025 gameplay deep dive, 2K described Kairos as a vast, connected planet with four distinct regions and factions resisting the Timekeeper. 2K’s December 2024 announcement and April 2025 gameplay deep dive provide the publisher’s later details.

The catastrophe behind the story
Gearbox creative director Graeme Timmins’s overview on the PlayStation Blog says the Timekeeper kept Kairos hidden for thousands of years behind a protective veil. Six years before the game’s events, a rogue moon teleported into orbit and shattered that veil. The Timekeeper controls inhabitants with cybernetic Bolts and commands synthetic soldiers known as the Order. This later story information establishes the game’s premise; it does not retroactively identify the environments in the 2024 artwork. Timmins’s Borderlands 4 overview covers the planet and its history.
How the later gameplay details expand the picture
The April 2025 deep dive introduced Vault Hunters Vex and Rafa and confirmed four-player online co-op. Timmins’s overview also describes the four playable Vault Hunters, a summonable Digirunner vehicle and traversal options including gliding, dashing, double-jumping and point-grappling. Those details show how exploration and combat were developed beyond the early art reveal.

Weapons and gear
Timmins named eight weapon manufacturers: Order, Ripper, Daedalus, Tediore, Maliwan, Jakobs, Vladof and Torgue. Order, Ripper and Daedalus were introduced as new manufacturers, with distinct weapon characteristics. The overview also discusses Licensed Parts, Ordnance, Enhancements, Repkits and a revised approach to Legendary drops. These are details from a pre-release overview, not a guide to current item stats or post-launch balance.
From four preview images to a full art book
The PAX presentation was a small selection of concept art, while Dark Horse Direct’s The Art of Borderlands 4 HC is a 224-page hardcover about the game’s development. Its description says it collects art and commentary on concepts, characters, enemies, environments and Kairos. The product page marked the book “Now Shipping” when checked; confirm the seller’s current stock and delivery details before ordering.
