Eligible games can be shared with other members of a Steam Family, while each game remains owned by the account that bought it. Steam Families supports up to six members.
How to let another account play your games
- Open the Steam Store page and go to Account Details.
- Open Family Management and create a Steam Family.
- Invite the other Steam account to join. The invitee must accept the invitation.
Steam Families is the current feature for sharing a library with separate accounts; it replaces Steam Family Sharing and Family View. Steam recommends inviting trusted household members. An account may be unable to join if its activity does not indicate the same household, or if the account or a family slot is in a cooldown period. If a cooldown applies, the Steam client shows the time remaining. See Steam’s current Steam Families FAQ for current joining rules.
What changes—and what does not
Sharing grants eligible family members access to a game; it does not move the license or ownership to their accounts. New purchases go into the collection of the account that paid for them. Steam accounts are for their creators’ personal use, and Steam says they cannot be bought or sold. For account security, do not give another person your password: Steam advises keeping credentials confidential and using its family-sharing feature instead. See Steam’s account security guidance and Steam’s account ownership guidance.
Can two accounts play at the same time?
Family members can play different games from the shared family libraries at the same time. To play the same title simultaneously, the family needs two copies of that game. If every copy is in use, another member must wait until one becomes available or the family must obtain an additional copy. Steam explains this rule in its Steam Families announcement.

Which games can be shared?
Not every Steam title is eligible. Steam lists exclusions that include:
- Games that require a third-party key, account, or subscription.
- Free-to-play games and their paid DLC.
- Games or DLC restricted by region.
- Games that do not support the other member’s operating system.
- Games whose publishers opt out of sharing.
- Games the owner has marked private.
Check the individual game’s sharing eligibility in Steam; family membership alone does not make an excluded title shareable. Eligibility rules can change, so use the current Steam Families FAQ and the game’s listing for the latest status.

How saves, achievements, and DLC work
Each family member earns achievements on their own account. Save behavior depends on the game, so do not assume a save will work identically across accounts or copies with different DLC. Steam notes that switching between family copies with different DLC can make a save incompatible. Whether DLC can be shared also depends on the publisher’s settings. Check the game’s sharing information before relying on a particular DLC or save setup.
What adults can manage, and what can go wrong
Steam Families includes controls for child accounts. Adults can manage family invitations and parental restrictions. Steam also warns that if a member cheats or commits fraud in a shared game, family privileges may be revoked and the account that shared the game may receive a VAC ban. Invite only people you trust and review Steam’s family rules.

Moving game files is not sharing a game
Steam’s local network transfer copies installation and update files between PCs to reduce internet downloads. It does not transfer a game license, ownership, local saves, or configuration files. By default, transfers are limited to devices where the same account is logged in. This feature moves files between devices; it does not grant a different account access to a game. See Steam’s local network game transfer guide.
