Choose a setup around the job you want it to do—such as ranged damage, status-and-mod play, or close-range pressure—then match your archetypes, primary slot, weapons, and gear to that role. Treat published combinations as starting points, not a definitive ranking: equipment, unlocked archetype levels, the fight, and your ability to execute the setup all matter.
What makes up a Remnant II build?
A build is the interaction of your archetypes and the rest of your loadout, rather than a weapon choice in isolation. Gunfire Games describes archetypes as carrying passive abilities, unique traits, and skills. You can equip two archetypes and combine their abilities; the archetype in the primary slot contributes its Prime Perk, so slot order matters. David Adams, president of Gunfire Games, described the dual-archetype system as a way to create “unique combinations of abilities” in an Xbox Wire interview.

Build guides also treat weapons, traits, and equipment—including rings, amulets, relics, mutators, and Prism—as part of the setup. These are in-game systems to coordinate with your archetypes, not purchases required to make a build. A useful way to evaluate any proposed setup is to ask what role it serves, what gear it depends on, and how comfortable it is to use.
How to choose a build
- Pick the job. Decide whether you want to emphasize ranged damage, status effects and weapon mods, close-range pressure, support, or survivability. A coherent build serves a purpose; that does not make it best for every boss.
- Check your available archetypes and levels. A suggested combination may depend on unlocks or archetype levels you do not yet have. Do not build around a setup you cannot currently equip.
- Set the primary archetype deliberately. Because the primary archetype supplies its Prime Perk, compare both slot orders rather than treating the pairing as interchangeable.
- Match weapons and gear to the plan. Check whether the recommendation relies on specific weapons or equipment. If you lack them, choose a setup that works with what you have instead of assuming the pairing alone will deliver the described result.
- Account for the encounter and your play style. Range, survivability, support, and ease of execution can matter more than a guide’s damage-focused label. Adjust when a boss or your own preferred approach calls for it.
Example archetype pairings by role
These are role-based examples from third-party guides, not an official or verified tier list. Their usefulness depends on your gear, progression, encounter, and execution.

| Pairing | Intended emphasis | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter / Gunslinger | Ranged damage | Choose it as a starting point if you want a ranged-focused approach; the recommendation still depends on your weapons and how you play. |
| Ritualist / Archon | Status effects and weapon mods | Consider whether your equipment and preferred play pattern support the status-and-mod focus. |
| Challenger / Engineer | Close-range pressure and heavy weapons | It is aimed at a more direct, heavy-weapon approach; consider the encounter and whether that style suits you. |
GameTruth’s combination guide, updated October 3, 2026, frames combinations as dependent on role and equipment and cautions against treating an offensive setup as an automatic answer to every boss. The table is best used to narrow your choices, then checked against the gear and play pattern you can actually sustain.
Why builds change with patches
Balance changes can alter how well a combination performs. In one patch note, Gunfire Games said Archon’s Havoc Form was dealing too much damage and that its changes were intended to bring it more in line with other builds. In material for The Forgotten Kingdom update, the developer described balance work intended to support more build options and player creativity. Those notes show why older recommendations may stop reflecting the current game; they do not establish which build is strongest in October 2026.

For a claim about the current “best,” “strongest,” or “meta” build, look for a recent recommendation that identifies its role and gear assumptions, and compare it with Gunfire Games’ official news and patch notes. The evidence available here does not establish a definitive live ranking or performance figures such as DPS or win rates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Archetypes can shape a play style
Archetype combinations are not just labels for damage categories: their skills and passives can support distinct ways of playing. Discussing the Invoker’s design in an April 26, 2024 Xbox Wire interview, principal designer Ben Cureton said the team wanted an archetype built around “Skill manipulation,” exploring additional skill charges, cooldown, duration, and buffs triggered while a skill was active. That design perspective is another reason to choose a build for how you want to play, not solely for a claim that it deals the most damage.
