Best Games to Play After Beating Mouthwashing

For more oppressive sci-fi horror, play SOMA; for an isolated crew facing a workplace disaster, try Still Wakes the Deep. Both offer a distinct take on narrative horror.

If you want more oppressive science-fiction horror and questions that linger after the credits, start with SOMA. If the stranded crew and workplace-disaster tension mattered more, try Still Wakes the Deep. Neither is a duplicate of Mouthwashing: each matches a different part of its appeal and has its own setting and style of play.

Which game should you play after Mouthwashing?

Mouthwashing puts a dying space freighter and its crew at the center of a story about isolation, starvation, and what happens between people under pressure, according to its Steam listing. The best next game depends on which part of that experience you want to revisit.

  • Choose SOMA for isolated science-fiction horror focused on identity and consciousness.
  • Choose Still Wakes the Deep for a trapped crew facing a disaster at a dangerous workplace.

Both are first-person narrative horror, but they do not reproduce Mouthwashing’s surreal space-freighter story or its particular structure.

How the two recommendations differ

Game Setting Central emphasis Play pressure
SOMA An isolated underwater facility Identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human Explore, evade threats, or run rather than fight
Still Wakes the Deep A 1970s North Sea oil rig struck by disaster A crew in danger amid a failing worksite Navigate the collapsing rig and survive without weapons or powers

These distinctions come from each game’s official Steam listing for SOMA and official Steam listing for Still Wakes the Deep. They are useful ways to choose, not a claim that one game is objectively closer for every player.

SOMA: start here for existential science-fiction horror

Frictional Games’ SOMA pairs an isolated underwater facility with questions about identity, consciousness, and being human. Its horror comes through exploration, hostile creatures and machines, and the need to outthink or evade danger rather than fight it, as described on Steam.

It is the strongest fit if what stayed with you in Mouthwashing was oppressive isolation and the unsettling ideas beneath the horror. The contrast matters: SOMA is underwater science fiction with first-person evasion gameplay, not a retelling of a surreal freighter crew’s story.

Still Wakes the Deep: choose it for crew-in-crisis tension

The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes the Deep is set on a North Sea oil rig in the 1970s, where disaster leaves the crew trying to survive and find one another. It is a first-person narrative horror game built around moving through a collapsing rig and surviving without weapons or special powers, according to its Steam listing.

Pick it if the endangered crew and the pressure of a workplace turning hostile are what you want more of. Its tension comes from disaster, traversal, and survival; it is less directly aligned with Mouthwashing’s psychological structure.

Why workplace horror may feel familiar

A July 2, 2026 PC Gamer interview with Wrong Organ’s developers describes recurring interests including dehumanization, body horror, and the mundane becoming wrong. Those themes help explain why workplace settings can resonate with Mouthwashing players, but they do not establish that Wrong Organ inspired either recommendation.
