Its objective-based scoring and creator lineup made it a showmatch, not confirmation of a lasting esports league or a definitive championship of the world’s best Marathon team.
What Bungie announced
Bungie’s March 11 announcement described six teams competing for the first Tau Ceti Cup Champions title. The event was scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11 AM PT, with IceManIsaac and Activee announced as casters. The competition has passed; these details describe the original schedule, not an upcoming broadcast.
The announcement named creator-led squads rather than established professional teams. Independent coverage likewise characterized the event as a showmatch, not a contest intended to determine the world’s best Marathon team. The announcement does not establish a permanent esports league or ruleset.
Which teams were listed?
| Team name | Listed members |
|---|---|
| BurntPeanut | TheBurntPeanut, Gingy, HutchMF |
| Aztecross | Aztecross, Symfuhny, Trey24k |
| Shroud | Shroud, LVNDMARK, Just9n |
| Bearki | Bearki, DeadlySlob, Aspen |
| Joueur_du_Grenier | Joueur_du_Grenier, Tonton, Shisheyu |
| Rubius | Rubius, IlloJuan, TheGrefg |
How the Tau Ceti Cup scoring worked
Bungie published a cumulative point system built around successful runs, rather than a direct elimination bracket. A run’s base score combined loadout value with points for AI and player kills, then applied an extraction multiplier.
#1 Best Overall
- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
- Each AI kill was worth 1,000 points; each finished player kill was worth 5,000.
- The extraction multiplier increased by 5% for each teammate who extracted, to a maximum of 15% when all three extracted.
- Priority contracts were worth points and varied by map. Examples included eliminating named Warden targets and completing objectives in the Pinwheel Ship.
- Additional faction-specific profit opportunities included extracting with valuable loot, extracting with a purple implant in every slot, eliminating Runners or Rooks, and scoring eliminations with explosives or throwables.
- The announcement also listed scoring tasks tied to sponsors NuCal and CyberAcme.
A run counted if at least one member of the team extracted. Completed contracts still counted even if the team was wiped. Together, the rules rewarded a mix of combat, objectives, loot, and extraction rather than simply surviving longer than an opponent.
What were the prizes and Twitch Drops?
Bungie announced a custom jacket for the winning team and community rewards. The post credited Australian cosplayer Vamprea with creating the Marathon jackets; it presented them as prizes, not merchandise for sale.

To claim them during that historical event, viewers needed to link Bungie.net and Twitch accounts, watch a competitor stream with Drops enabled, claim rewards in Twitch Inventory, and log into Marathon. These Drops were tied to the event window and are not a current offer.

Marathon launch context
The Cup was announced shortly after Marathon’s launch. Bungie’s March 4 launch post said the game would go live March 5, 2026, at 10 AM PT on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. That is launch-era platform information, not a check of current availability.

The Tau Ceti Cup showed how Bungie could frame Marathon around a creator event with team objectives, scoring, and viewer rewards. Its published rules support describing it as a structured competition, while the invited-creator lineup and showmatch framing distinguish it from a professional league championship. Bungie’s announcement and the independent Insider Gaming report published March 11, 2026 do not verify final standings or a winning team, so no result can be established here.
