Sometimes. Java Edition players on different releases can join only when the server accepts their client versions, often with a compatibility plugin such as ViaVersion. Java and Bedrock players cannot join an ordinary server together by default, but Bedrock players can connect to a Java server configured with Geyser if its version and network setup are supported.
First check whether you mean editions or numbered versions
“Different versions” can mean two different things, and the answer depends on which one applies.
- Different editions: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition do not directly join the same ordinary server by default. Minecraft’s multiplayer guidance says players need matching editions: Bedrock players need a Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game, while Java players need Java. A Java server can add cross-edition access with Geyser. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.
- Different Java releases: The server must accept the client’s protocol. Some server setups support clients on other releases, but a specific version pairing depends on the server software and compatibility tools installed.
Minecraft recommends using the latest release to avoid multiplayer connection errors. That is the simplest route when everyone can update and the server supports the same release.
How Java players on different releases can connect
Ask the server owner which Java version the server runs and which client protocols it accepts. A compatibility tool such as ViaVersion may let supported newer Java clients join an older Java server, but it does not mean every client-server pairing will work. The owner must verify that the particular server software and tool versions support the releases involved.

If the server uses mods, check whether each player needs matching client-side mods. Compatibility between Minecraft releases does not by itself make a modded server compatible with every client.
How Bedrock players can join a Java server
Geyser acts as a bridge: it lets Bedrock clients connect to a Java server by translating their connection. It does not make every Java server compatible with every Bedrock release. Geyser’s supported-versions documentation currently says it emulates a Java 26.2 client, so the Java server must accept that client version. Older servers may need ViaVersion to accept it. Check the current Geyser supported-version guidance before configuring a server; these requirements can change with Minecraft updates.
Geyser setup depends on the server software
- Paper or Spigot: Geyser-Spigot supports servers running Minecraft 1.20.5 or later and requires Java 21 or later. For Paper or Spigot below 1.20.5, the documented direct setup is not supported; Geyser points instead to a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord, or to Geyser Standalone with ViaVersion. ViaProxy with Geyser-ViaProxy is another documented route.
- Fabric or NeoForge: Geyser supports only the latest Minecraft Java version on these server types. For older versions, Geyser recommends ViaProxy with Geyser-ViaProxy.
For details on installation, authentication, and network requirements, follow Geyser’s setup guide. Floodgate is an optional companion that can let Bedrock players connect without a paid Java Edition account; it does not remove the need for a supported version combination or correct server configuration.
Client-side mods are a limitation
Geyser does not support client-side-required mods. Server-side-only mods are a separate case, but if a mod must be installed on each player’s device, do not assume Bedrock players can use that Java server through Geyser.

Bedrock connections need UDP access
Bedrock traffic through Geyser uses UDP. The default Geyser port is 19132. For players connecting remotely, the server’s UDP port must be reachable through the firewall and, where relevant, forwarded through the router; Geyser also documents a tunnel option. - Are you using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition? The edition determines whether you need ordinary version compatibility or a crossplay bridge.
- What exact Minecraft version and server software are running—vanilla, Paper/Spigot, Fabric/NeoForge, a proxy, or a hosted setup?
- For Java clients, which client protocols does the server accept, and is a compatible ViaVersion setup installed if needed?
- For Bedrock access to Java, is Geyser installed through a supported setup path, and does the Java server accept Geyser’s currently emulated client version?
- Can Bedrock clients reach the Geyser UDP port from outside the server’s network?
- Does the server require client-side mods? If so, Geyser crossplay will not support clients that need those mods.
Because compatibility changes as Minecraft releases are updated, check the current Geyser support matrix and the server software’s compatibility information rather than relying on an old setup guide.
