Endermen do not naturally spawn on bottom slabs. Top slabs and double slabs can still be spawnable, so the slab’s placement matters. This rule covers the surface block only; Endermen must also meet the applicable dimension, biome, light, space, and difficulty conditions.
Which slabs stop Endermen from spawning?

The distinction is slab height: a bottom slab is less than a full block tall, so it prevents natural mob spawning. A top slab sits at the upper half of the block space, while a double slab forms a full block; neither should be treated as spawn-proof. How to spawn-proof a floor
- Place slabs in the bottom position on every surface you want to protect. Check the visible height: the slab should occupy the lower half of the block space.
- Inspect edges, corners, and gaps for exposed full blocks or top slabs, which may remain valid spawning surfaces.
- If Endermen still appear, check other spawn conditions rather than assuming the slab rule is the only factor. Dimension, biome, light, available space, and difficulty can all matter.
Why edition and dimension matter
Slab orientation is only one part of spawning. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference sample includes light and difficulty filters as well as surface, underground, and biome conditions. In that sample, general Enderman surface and underground conditions include light level 0–7 and difficulty from Easy to Hard. The sample was last updated September 19, 2023, so it documents that reference sample rather than guaranteeing every condition in every later Bedrock version: Microsoft’s Bedrock Enderman spawn-rule sample.
For Java Edition, Mojang’s 1.19 release notes state that Endermen in the Nether spawn at light levels 0–11. That is a Nether-specific rule from Java 1.19, not a universal light threshold for the Overworld or the End: Java Edition 1.19 release notes.

What to check when a farm behaves unexpectedly
- Confirm slab placement: a top slab or double slab is not equivalent to a bottom slab for spawn-proofing.
- Confirm the intended location: spawning conditions differ by dimension, edition, and environment.
- Check the remaining conditions: light, biome, available space, and difficulty may affect whether Endermen can spawn at a location.
