Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 puts a co-op-ready campaign, psychological warfare and a large-scale follow-on mode at the center of its design. That combination is ambitious, but it is also a sharp departure from the more familiar, tightly directed campaign some players want. Reviews and fan comments show different objections and attractions—not a measurable verdict from the player base as a whole.
What Black Ops 7’s campaign is designed to be
Activision announced Black Ops 7 on August 19, 2025. Set in 2035, after the events of Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 6, the story follows David “Section” Mason and a JSOC team to Avalon, a Mediterranean city. The team encounters the Guild, led by Emma Kagan, and a weapon that turns fear into a tool of war. Raul Menendez also returns. The premise deliberately connects the story to earlier Black Ops events while leaning into psychological warfare. Activision’s reveal briefing lays out those story details.
Solo play, squad co-op and progression
The campaign can be played alone or with up to three other players. Treyarch’s Miles Leslie described a story built around four central heroes: “You can play solo or team up in a squad of up to four players, and the way the story unfolds mirrors what our four main heroes are going through as they unravel the mystery at the heart of the game.” That is the studio’s description of the format, not evidence that solo and co-op play feel equally satisfying to every player. Leslie’s Xbox Wire interview explains the design.
At reveal, Activision also said players could earn XP, level weapons, unlock camos and complete challenges in the campaign, with progress carrying into Multiplayer and Zombies, and into Warzone beginning with Season 1. Those are announced progression plans; the details may change, so check the current game information for how progression works now.

Why the design splits campaign preferences
The disagreement is less about one universally accepted standard for a “good” Call of Duty campaign than about what players want the campaign to prioritize. Black Ops 7 combines elements that appeal to different tastes, and puts some of them in tension.
| Preference | What Black Ops 7 offers | Why a player might object |
|---|---|---|
| Solo play or squad co-op | Play alone or with up to three other players, according to Treyarch’s 2025 description. | A player looking for a campaign tailored around a solo protagonist may not want a story structured around a squad. |
| Directed set pieces or broad objectives | GamesRadar+ describes a mix of set-piece missions and larger objective areas. | Players who prefer tightly paced, linear missions may find open-ended spaces less focused. PC Gamer also criticizes the campaign’s use of large spaces. |
| Familiar military action or psychological strangeness | The story centers on fear, psychological warfare and links to previous Black Ops events. | That experimental premise may not suit someone seeking a more conventional military thriller; GamesRadar+ argues the vision may be incongruous with player expectations. |
| A self-contained campaign or connected modes | The campaign leads into Endgame, while announced progression links campaign play to other modes. | Players who want the campaign to stand on its own may see the connected structure as a distraction rather than added value. |
The trade-offs are preferences, not objective rankings. A feature that makes the campaign more appealing to a group may be a drawback for someone who wants a focused solo story.

What reviewers criticize—and what fans say
Reviewers disagree with the campaign’s execution
GamesRadar+ calls the game ambitious and experimental while criticizing its storytelling and questioning whether its vision fits what players expect from Call of Duty. PC Gamer objects to the large spaces and characterizes ideas and assets as reused across modes. Those are the reviewers’ assessments; they should not be mistaken for confirmed developer intent or a consensus among players. Read the GamesRadar+ review and PC Gamer review for their full arguments.
One discussion captures several different reactions
In a Reddit thread titled “What are y’all’s honest opinions on Black Ops 7 campaign?”, commenters raise objections to solo play, online requirements, story choices and open areas. One commenter calls it “already worst campaign ive ever played.” Others describe enjoying the campaign with a group or liking the returning characters. These comments illustrate the range of priorities, but a single discussion—and its votes—cannot establish how most players feel. Read the Reddit discussion in context.

Endgame makes the campaign part of a larger arc
Endgame is a follow-on experience set in Avalon after the campaign missions. The official briefing describes it as replayable and says it follows the first 11 missions; Treyarch described it as supporting up to 32 players in its 2025 interview. Those are mode-design details, not measures of fan opinion. The structure may appeal to players who want to keep exploring the campaign’s world, while feeling like an unwanted extension to players who prefer a contained story. The official Endgame briefing describes how it follows the campaign.
