Seattle’s Minecraft recreation was a community-built, 1:1-scale project within BuildTheEarth, the volunteer effort to recreate the planet in the game. A May 2021 report counted 1,179 buildings in the Seattle build—past the team’s 1,000-building challenge—but that is a historical figure, not a verified current total.
What is the Seattle Minecraft project?
The Seattle build was part of BuildTheEarth, a global community project whose stated ambition is to recreate Earth at 1:1 scale in Minecraft. Rather than a single creator constructing a city alone, the Seattle effort drew on a group of builders and BuildTheEarth teams.
GeekWire reported on May 22, 2021, that PippenFTS had launched a March challenge to assemble 1,000 Seattle buildings. The group had passed that target: the article counted 1,179. Treat that number as the 2021 report’s progress snapshot, not as a current inventory or proof that the Seattle map is complete.
How did builders recreate Seattle?
Maps and real-world references
Builders used Google Maps and Google Earth as references for the city’s layout and buildings. Spencer, who posted under the Reddit name WigitMigit, described the approach to GeekWire: “We utilized Google Maps and Google Earth as our reference, and we have a mod that essentially generates the world’s height data onto a Minecraft map.”

Generated terrain, then construction
A mod supplied terrain height data to the Minecraft world, giving builders a landscape to build on. The GeekWire article also referred to an earlier explanation from PippenFTS about mods addressing Minecraft’s then-normal terrain-height limit; that historical detail should not be read as a statement about the game’s current limits.
The resulting recreation included recognizable landmarks such as Columbia Tower, Lumen Field, Smith Tower and the Amazon Spheres. Spencer made the highlight video featured in GeekWire and credited BuildTheEarth teams with doing most of the construction.
How many buildings and hours did it take?
GeekWire’s May 2021 report tied the labor figures below to the 1,179-building count. The collective-hours figure was explicitly described as an estimate with a wide margin of error.
| Measure | Reported figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Buildings | 1,179 | Count reported by GeekWire in May 2021; not a current total. |
| Collective build time | About 3,018 hours | GeekWire relayed this as an estimate with a wide margin of error. |
| PippenFTS’s work | 256 hours for the first 100 buildings; an estimated 410 hours total | Figures attributed to PippenFTS in GeekWire’s 2021 report. |
PippenFTS described the personal and organizational demands in the same report: “The two hardest parts were keeping everyone motivated, and keeping the stamina up personally, being on every day and grinding to the best of my ability,”

How large is BuildTheEarth now?
BuildTheEarth’s official homepage currently describes a volunteer community building a 1:1-scale Earth recreation. As accessed on October 8, 2026, the homepage reported more than 1,050,000 buildings, 1,070 km² and 17,600 builders. The site does not give those figures an explicit as-of date, so they are best understood as live, site-reported totals rather than audited counts. They describe BuildTheEarth overall, not Seattle specifically.

BuildTheEarth says its servers are open and free to explore, and directs visitors to join its central hub using Minecraft Java Edition. That is general access guidance for the project; the available sources do not confirm whether Seattle is currently reachable through the servers. The 2021 Seattle report does not establish present-day availability, so check the project’s current hub or regional-team information before expecting to teleport to the city.
