This is a historically grounded shortlist, not an objective ranking: the evidence is strongest for arcade games and does not establish a comprehensive comparison with console or home-computer games.
How to read this 1981 shortlist
“Best” depends on what matters to a player. This selection weighs three things: distinctive play, historical influence, and documented prominence. The available historical accounts support these five games as notable 1981 candidates, but they do not provide comparable sales figures or a single period ranking. The games below are presented without a numbered order.
Five notable games from 1981
Donkey Kong
Nintendo says it developed and distributed Donkey Kong as a coin-operated game in 1981, and that it quickly became “the hottest-selling individual coin-operated machine in the business.” That is Nintendo’s qualitative description; its history gives no unit total. The Strong National Museum of Play identifies the game’s protagonist as Jumpman, later known as Mario. TIME places the game’s American arcade introduction on June 2, 1981, a date specific to the United States. Nintendo’s history, The Strong’s timeline and TIME’s retrospective document its commercial and character-history significance.
Galaga
Bandai Namco’s official history places Galaga under 1981 and calls out its Dual Fighter mechanic and bonus stages. These are concrete design features that distinguish its shooting play; the history cited here does not establish a sales rank. Bandai Namco’s official history is the source for the year and those features.

Ms. PAC-MAN
In its 1981 timeline section, Bandai Namco describes Ms. PAC-MAN as using alternating maze designs and two warp tunnels. Those changes give the game a distinct variation on maze-chase play. The timeline supports its placement in 1981, but does not establish an exact release date or individual development credits. Bandai Namco’s history provides the description and timeline context.
Centipede
The Science Museum Group lists Atari’s Centipede as an arcade release in 1981. That supports its place on a historically oriented list, while the cited timeline does not provide enough comparative detail to assign it a rank against the other games here. The Science Museum Group timeline records the release year and arcade context.

The strongest documented case for historical prominence belongs to Donkey Kong: Nintendo makes a commercial superlative claim, while The Strong connects Jumpman to the character later known as Mario. Galaga and Ms. PAC-MAN stand out in the cited official history for specific mechanics. The available museum timeline supports Centipede and Frogger as 1981 releases, but gives less information for comparing their influence or popularity.

This evidence is weighted toward arcade games. The Science Museum Group also records the Sinclair ZX81 and BBC Microcomputer as home-computing developments from 1981, but those entries do not establish a broad, comparable list of that year’s home-computer games. Release timing could also vary by territory and arcade operator, so a year attached to a timeline should not be treated as a universal launch date.
