If “best” means the strongest combination of critic acclaim and a major year-end award, Metroid Prime is the clearest lead: Metacritic’s 2002 release-year catalog lists it at 97, and GameSpot named it its 2002 Game of the Year. There is no single objective winner, though: GameSpot’s report of the AIAS awards names Battlefield 1942 as overall Game of the Year. The right pick also depends on platform and the kind of game you want.

How to choose the best game of 2002

The answer changes with the measure. Metacritic’s living release-year catalog ranks games by critics’ aggregate scores; GameSpot’s annual award reflects one publication’s choice; and GameSpot’s report of the AIAS awards records an industry award result. These are useful but different kinds of evidence, not interchangeable rankings.

Metacritic says its catalog excludes games with fewer than seven critic reviews. The scores below are the values displayed in its 2002 catalogs as accessed in 2026, not fixed historical measurements or proof that one game is objectively best.

Best-known 2002 contenders

Game Evidence Why it stands out
Metroid Prime 97 in Metacritic’s 2002 all-platform catalog; GameSpot’s 2002 Game of the Year The strongest critic-led overall pick in this group, and the clearest recommendation if you want a highly acclaimed GameCube adventure.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker 96 in Metacritic’s 2002 all-platform catalog A leading alternative for players looking for a major Nintendo adventure.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 95 in Metacritic’s 2002 all-platform catalog A high-scoring alternative for players drawn to open-world action. Check the platform and edition before choosing a copy.
Battlefield 1942 GameSpot reported that it won the AIAS overall Game of the Year and four awards in total The award-led answer, particularly relevant if you want a military game with a strong online-play identity.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell GameSpot reported it as the AIAS console Game of the Year A separate award-backed choice for players interested in tactical action.
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos 92 in Metacritic’s 2002 PC catalog A strong PC strategy pick, with a high position in the platform-specific ranking.

Metacritic’s all-platform ranking is at Best Games (2002); its PC-specific ranking is at Best Games on PC (2002). The scores are catalog values, so consult the listings for their current display.

Which 2002 game should you play?

For the critic-led overall pick: Metroid Prime

Choose Metroid Prime if you want the leading all-platform Metacritic entry and GameSpot’s annual winner. GameSpot’s retrospective award page quotes reviewer Greg Kasavin’s November 15, 2002 review: “Let’s get right to the point: Metroid Prime is the best GameCube game to date. It’s one of the best games on any platform this year, and, for good measure, it’s also the best game yet in Nintendo’s highly acclaimed Metroid series.” That is a contemporary review judgment, not a claim that every player will prefer it.

For a different Nintendo adventure: The Wind Waker

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is close behind Metroid Prime in Metacritic’s 2002 all-platform catalog at 96. It is an obvious alternative if you are narrowing the list to major Nintendo releases, rather than treating the top score as the only criterion.

For open-world action: Vice City

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City appears at 95 in that same catalog. It offers a distinct choice from the exploration-led Nintendo titles; verify the platform and edition because versions can differ.

For PC strategy: Warcraft III

For a PC-focused shortlist, Metacritic lists Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos at 92. The same PC catalog lists Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Neverwinter Nights at 91 each, giving strategy fans and players seeking other styles credible alternatives.

For the award result: Battlefield 1942 or Splinter Cell

GameSpot’s March 4, 2003 report of the AIAS awards says Battlefield 1942 won overall Game of the Year, Computer Game of the Year, innovation in computer gaming, and online gameplay—four awards in all. The report names Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell as console Game of the Year. These results make both worth considering, but they do not replace a critic aggregate or settle which game suits you.

Why some “top games of 2002” lists disagree

Not every list measures games released during 2002. GameFAQs’ “The Top 10 Games of 2002” ranked hits to its FAQ pages during that calendar year, explicitly not just games released that year or users’ favorite games. Final Fantasy X topped that page-traffic list, but that result measures activity on GameFAQs, not release-year critical acclaim or a year-end quality award. See GameFAQs’ December 2002 list for its stated method.

What to check before choosing a version

  • Platform and edition: Confirm the platform you want; releases and editions can differ. The rankings cited here include all-platform and PC-specific catalogs, not a guarantee that every version is equivalent.
  • Play style: The shortlist spans first-person exploration, open-world action, real-time strategy, and tactical or military action. Pick by genre and preferred play style, not score alone.
  • Solo, multiplayer, and age rating: Check the listing for the specific platform and edition to confirm its content rating and whether its play modes fit what you want.
  • Older design and compatibility: These are 2002 releases. Check the platform-specific listing and the system you intend to use; the rankings do not establish modern compatibility.
