Sony’s instruction manual for PS3 Slim models CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B states that the system “is not compatible with and will not play PlayStation®2 format software.”
What happens if you insert a PS2 disc into a PS3 Slim?
The game will not be playable. Sony’s manual for the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B Slim family explicitly marks PlayStation 2 format software as unsupported. The answer concerns original PS2 disc playback; a PS2 memory card or another accessory does not change the Slim’s compatibility.

Which PS3 models can play most PS2 discs?
Sony lists selected earlier PS3 models—not Slim models—as able to play most PlayStation 2 format discs. Check the full CECH model number on the console and match it to the sales region; “fat PS3” alone is not a reliable compatibility label.
| Sales region | PS3 models Sony lists for most PS2-format discs |
|---|---|
| Japan | CECHA00, CECHB00 |
| USA/Canada | CECHA01, CECHB01, CECHE01 |
| Latin America | CECHE11 |
| Europe/Australia/New Zealand | CECHC02, CECHC03, CECHC04, CECHC08 |
| Korea | CECHE05 |
| Hong Kong/Taiwan/Southeast Asia | CECHA12, CECHB12, CECHE12, CECHA07, CECHB07, CECHA06, CECHE06 |
These are specific regional model numbers, not a claim that every early PS3 can play PS2 discs. Sony says even a listed PS3 may run a game differently from original PS2 hardware, and some discs may not work.

What should you use to play original PS2 games?
A PlayStation 2 console is the straightforward option for original PS2 discs. If you need to save game progress, PS2 games use a compatible PS2 memory card; that card is for saving and loading data on a PS2, not for enabling PS2 playback on a PS3 Slim. When considering a used console, check that its disc drive works and that the controller, power and video connections, and any needed memory card are included.
