Yes. Use a fishing rod in water, then reel in when the bobber dips below the surface. Salmon is one possible catch, alongside other fish, treasure, and junk.
How to catch salmon with a fishing rod
- Get a fishing rod. Minecraft.net describes crafting one with three sticks and two string in its general fishing guide; exact details can vary by edition or release.
- Cast the rod so its bobber lands in water. The size of the water does not have to be large: Duncan Geere, writing for Minecraft.net, says in “Taking Inventory: Fishing Rod” (February 9, 2026) that even a tiny puddle can work.
- Watch the bobber and reel in when it dips below the surface. Minecraft.net says the wait for a fish to approach can range from five to 30 seconds; rain and direct exposure to the sky can shorten it.
A successful catch is not guaranteed to be salmon. Fishing can yield different fish, treasure, or junk, and Minecraft.net notes that the biome affects what you catch.

How likely is salmon to be the catch?
The community-maintained Minecraft Wiki’s fishing table lists salmon as 25% of the fish category and gives an overall 21.3% chance for raw salmon with no enchantments. These figures are from the Wiki, not Mojang; its cited table does not identify a publication date or version, so treat them as a general reference rather than guaranteed odds for every edition and release. What fishing enchantments change
- Lure reduces the time before a catch, according to Minecraft.net’s fishing guide.
- Luck of the Sea shifts the catch mix toward treasure and away from junk. It is not a salmon-specific boost. The Minecraft Wiki table shows a slightly lower overall raw-salmon chance with this enchantment, consistent with the mix shifting toward treasure.
Does the bobber need open water?
No, not just to catch salmon. The Minecraft Wiki says an open-water area around the bobber is required for treasure eligibility. Fish and junk can still be caught when that condition is not met. Minecraft Wiki: Fishing.
