Yes. A tapped creature can be dealt damage: being tapped does not protect it. The key distinction is whether the creature was tapped before attackers were declared or only after it was already in combat.
Can a tapped creature take damage?
Yes. Magic’s rules distinguish damage dealt in combat from damage dealt by spells or abilities, but tapped status alone prevents neither. If a spell or ability can legally affect a tapped creature, it can deal damage to it unless another effect prevents or changes that damage. The current Comprehensive Rules cover damage and combat; Wizards’ keyword glossary also distinguishes combat damage from other damage that may happen during the combat phase.
Does tapping an attacker stop its combat damage?
No. Under Comprehensive Rule 506.4b, “Tapping or untapping a creature that’s already been declared as an attacker or blocker doesn’t remove it from combat and doesn’t prevent its combat damage.” Combat damage is assigned during the combat damage step based on which creatures remain in combat and their power—not on whether they are currently tapped.
Example: tapped after attacking
A 3/3 creature attacks and becomes tapped. If an effect taps it again after attackers are declared, it remains an attacking creature and can still assign its combat damage, provided no other effect removes it from combat or changes what happens.

Can a creature attack if it is already tapped?
Ordinarily, no. Attackers are chosen while untapped, and creatures declared as attackers are then tapped. So a creature that is already tapped when attackers are declared cannot ordinarily be chosen as an attacker. That restriction concerns declaring attackers; it does not make tapped creatures immune to damage or undo an attack that has already been declared.
What if a spell or ability deals damage to it?
A damage spell or ability can deal damage to a tapped creature if its wording allows that creature to be affected and the target is legal. Check the card’s exact text along with any effects that prevent or modify damage. Tapped status by itself is not a barrier.

For a particular interaction, read the relevant card text and check the current rules. Wizards says the Rules page provides the Comprehensive Rules as a reference for specific questions and corner cases; the linked rules document is effective September 25, 2026.
