Yes—Nintendo Switch games use the console’s selected language when the individual game supports it. Change it from HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Language. The Switch restarts to apply the change, closing any suspended software.
How to change the language for a Switch game
Save your progress and close the game before changing the setting. Because the console restarts and closes suspended software, unsaved progress could be lost.

- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- In the left column, scroll down and select System.
- In the right column, select Language.
- Choose the language you want.
- Allow the console to restart, then reopen the game.
Nintendo’s system-language instructions describe this path for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch – OLED Model.
Why the game may stay in its current language
The system setting does not add languages to a game. Nintendo says software defaults to the console’s selected language only “so long as the intended language is supported by the game or software application.” For example, a game that supports Spanish will use Spanish when the console is set to Spanish; a game that does not support the chosen language may continue using another language.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The console’s menu language list and a game’s language support are separate things. Nintendo lists English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean as system languages for the Switch models covered by its instructions. That list is not a promise that every game supports all of them.
What to check if changing the setting did not work
- Confirm that the game supports the language you selected. Check the game’s language information or its support page.
- Look in the game’s own settings for a language option. Whether a separate in-game selector exists depends on the title.
- If support information is unclear, check the information for your specific game and edition; Nintendo’s general guidance does not establish the language options for every title or region.
Nintendo’s guidance here concerns Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch – OLED Model; do not assume the same menu choices apply to another console without checking its instructions.
