Hybrid mana gives you a choice of how to pay; it does not remove either color from the card’s Commander color identity.
Why paying one color does not make the card mono-color
A two-color hybrid symbol can be paid with either of the colors it shows. A white-blue hybrid symbol, for example, can be paid with white or blue mana. But the symbol still counts as both colors for Commander color identity. Wizards explains this in its Ravnica Allegiance Release Notes, published January 16, 2019.
Wizards uses Senate Griffin as an example: you can cast it by paying only white mana, but its color identity includes both white and blue. It therefore cannot be included in a Commander deck whose commander has only white color identity. The mana you plan to spend does not change the card’s identity.
How the Commander deck-building rule applies
Commander color identity can come from a card’s casting cost and the mana symbols in its rules text. A deck’s cards must stay within the color identity of its commander, as described on Wizards’ Commander Format page.

- EPIC MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Magic’s most popular multiplayer play format, Commander is an action-packed, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue (best with 3–5 players)
- A mono-white commander cannot include a white-blue hybrid card.
- A mono-green commander cannot include a green-black hybrid card.
- A commander whose identity includes both colors can include a card with those colors in its identity, subject to the other deck-building rules.
- A card whose identity fits the commander’s identity—or has no colors in its identity—remains eligible under this restriction.
In short, check the card’s complete color identity against the commander’s, not just the color of mana you expect to use when casting it.
Is the hybrid rule changing?
No change was announced in Wizards’ February 9, 2026 Commander Brackets Beta Update. Wizards said it was “not making any change to how hybrid works in Commander today,” describing the existing approach as treating a two-color hybrid card as both colors for color identity. This is the current status confirmed by that update; check Wizards’ Commander page or a later Format Panel update for any subsequent change.

What about formats other than Commander?
Commander’s color-identity restriction is format-specific. Other formats do not use that restriction, though each has its own deck-building and card-legality rules. In those formats, a hybrid cost may be paid with either color shown in the symbol.
