There is no single best gun in Hell Let Loose: the right pick depends on your class, available loadout and squad’s objective. The official sources do not publish a weapon tier list or comparative performance tests, so the recommendations below focus on choosing a useful kit—not claiming one weapon wins every fight. They reflect Update 21, released September 22, 2026.
How to choose a gun in Hell Let Loose
Start with the job your squad needs done, then check which loadout gives you the weapon and what else comes with it. A primary weapon is only one part of a class: an explosive ammo box or rifle grenade, for example, can make the full kit more useful for a particular task.

That approach fits the game’s team-first design. Team17’s official Hell Let Loose overview says it is “not about kill to death ratios,” but about working together to dominate and outstrategise the enemy. Treat any recommendation as situational guidance, not an official ranking.
Notable weapons and loadouts in Update 21
Update 21 arrived on September 22, 2026. Its official changelog adds or changes several class options. The table distinguishes the weapon from the utility of the full loadout; the notes do not establish comparative damage, range, accuracy or other performance rankings.

| Weapon or change | Class or availability | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| M1903A3 Springfield Rifle | New US Rifleman loadout | The loadout includes an Explosive Ammo Box, so consider the resupply utility alongside the rifle. |
| ROKS 2 Flamethrower | New Soviet Support loadout | A specialist Support option; choose it when that loadout suits the squad’s plan rather than assuming it is a general-purpose upgrade. |
| Rifle-grenade loadouts | Level-gated options for appropriate factions and roles | Check the role and level requirement in the loadout menu. The rifle grenade adds utility to the kit, so do not compare only the rifle. |
| M1 Carbine | Standard US Anti-Tank primary weapon | This is a class-specific standard loadout change, not a universal recommendation for other roles. |
| M3 Grease Gun | Standard US Tank Commander primary weapon | Its relevance is tied to the Tank Commander kit. |
| Rifle No.4 Mk I | British level-one Engineer primary weapon | Update 21 changes the primary weapon available in that starting Engineer loadout. |
Team17’s Dev Brief #220, dated September 1, 2026, previewed upcoming content; the September 22 changelog is the source for the update’s release and implemented changes.
Weapons with selectable firing modes
Update 21 added selectable firing modes to weapons that historically support them. The official notes list the MG34, FG42, STG 44, M1918A2 BAR, M1A1 Thompson, M1928A1 Thompson, Bren Gun, Sten Gun Mk.II (including the Canadian version), Sten Gun Mk.V and PPSH 41.

Use the selector to match the mode to the immediate situation: a controlled mode can help you manage shots, while an automatic mode may suit a different moment. That is practical handling guidance, not evidence that one setting performs better overall. The patch notes confirm the selectable modes but do not compare their results. They also report slight recoil increases for the STG 44 and Bren Gun.

- Pick the role first. Decide what the squad needs from you before choosing a weapon.
- Check the exact loadout. Confirm the primary weapon, accompanying equipment and any level requirement; Update 21 introduced role- and level-specific options.
- Match the kit to the task. Account for utility such as rifle grenades or the Explosive Ammo Box, not just the name of the gun.
- Use firing modes deliberately. If the weapon has a selector, choose a mode that suits the engagement and your control of the weapon; no official performance test establishes a universally best mode.
These recommendations are bounded by the official notes available for Update 21. They identify changed weapons and loadouts, but do not publish comparative weapon statistics or declare a best gun. Recheck the in-game loadouts and later patch notes if balance or availability changes.
