What is the best game of 1992? If one pick needs an award-backed case, Street Fighter II leads: Game Informer later reported that it won the magazine’s first Game of the Year award in 1992, as well as Best Playability. But the year’s strongest games came from very different genres and platforms, so the right choice depends on whether you value competition, exploration, strategy, or historical influence.
How to choose among the best games of 1992
There is no single, universal ranking of the year’s releases. This shortlist treats “best” as a mix of contemporary recognition, distinctive play, and later influence—not a definitive sales chart. The games below are representative picks rather than a complete release catalog; release timing can also vary by region and platform.
- Award recognition: Game Informer’s retrospective identifies its own 1992 winners; those awards reflect one magazine’s judgment.
- Genre range: The selection covers fighting, platforming, racing, role-playing, strategy, and horror.
- Historical influence: Later accounts credit some games with shaping conventions in their genres. Those are historical interpretations, not a claim that influence can be measured objectively.
Standout games of 1992
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II is the clearest award-backed choice. Game Informer says it won the magazine’s first Game of the Year award in 1992 and also took Best Playability. In a 2017 retrospective, writer Jeff Marchiafava recalled staff praising the SNES port as a “perfect translation” of the arcade sensation; that is the retrospective’s account, not a quotation verified against the original issue. NAVGTR later described the game’s character-specific fighting styles and moves as a turning point for the genre. Game Informer’s award retrospective and NAVGTR’s fighting-game history provide those perspectives.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sega’s fast-moving platformer was another major 1992 pick. Game Informer named it Best Graphics in its 1992 awards, while a year overview includes it among the notable releases. That recognition offers a strong alternative if you prefer platforming to head-to-head combat; it does not establish a universal winner or a verified sales ranking. Game Informer’s retrospective lists the award.

Super Mario Kart
Super Mario Kart brought character-based competition to racing, making it a natural pick for players who want a lively multiplayer contest rather than a traditional race simulation. It is among the year’s notable games in the 1992 video-game overview.
Dune II
Dune II is a standout for strategy fans. A later Den of Geek history points to its role in establishing conventions associated with real-time strategy games. That makes it important not only as a game to play, but as a way to see a genre taking shape. Den of Geek’s retrospective discusses its influence.
Alone in the Dark
For horror, Alone in the Dark used fixed-camera presentation to build unease and constrain what the player could see. Den of Geek identifies that design as influential in the evolution of survival horror. Its appeal is more atmospheric than action-focused, making it a distinct choice in a year better known to many players for its arcade and console hits. Den of Geek’s retrospective also addresses its horror design.

Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat became a defining fighting-game release, but its importance also extends beyond play. The Computer History Museum connects it and other violent games with congressional hearings in 1992, and describes the subsequent creation of the ESRB by major publishers. The hearings and ratings body should not be attributed to Mortal Kombat alone. The Computer History Museum’s account of the ESRB’s origins provides the context.

Role-playing game fans had two major Japanese releases to consider: Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy V. Both appear in the year overview, illustrating how the best-of-1992 conversation reaches beyond the Western arcade and console hits most commonly singled out in award retrospectives. Their release availability and timing differed by region, so a global ranking should not assume that every player could access each game in 1992.
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 2 is a strong pick for side-scrolling action. Its inclusion broadens the shortlist beyond one-on-one fighters: it offers cooperative, forward-scrolling combat and a different kind of arcade-style challenge. The 1992 overview lists it among the year’s releases.

What made 1992 a notable year for games?
The year’s releases crossed arcade, console, and computer gaming, with major titles in fighting, platforming, racing, role-playing, strategy, and horror. They also mattered in different ways: Street Fighter II earned a prominent magazine award, while later genre histories have emphasized the influence of Dune II and Alone in the Dark. Meanwhile, the public debate around violent games helped frame a broader ratings discussion that involved more than one title.
Claims about commercial success require a separate standard of evidence. The year overview names Street Fighter II and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 among leading home releases, but it is a tertiary reference rather than an original publisher sales record. No precise sales figure is established here, so the shortlist does not rank the games by units sold.
