Choose The Elder Scrolls Online for Tamriel and a flexible mix of solo quests and co-op, Black Desert Online for real-time combat and varied activities, or Warframe for cooperative action—though it is MMO-adjacent rather than a conventional MMORPG. Console availability and cross-play are different questions, so check each game’s platform support and shared-play features separately.
How to choose a console MMO
There is no single best console MMO for every player. Start with the kind of game you want, then check platform support and whether cross-platform play is actually available. A game appearing on multiple consoles does not, by itself, mean its players share servers or can form groups across platforms.
- Genre: Decide whether you want a traditional MMORPG or an online action game with MMO-like cooperative play.
- Story and solo play: Look for a strong main story, NPC-assisted dungeons, or quests that work well without a regular group.
- Combat: Consider whether you prefer structured party encounters or real-time action.
- Social play: Check for guilds, group-finding, raids, cooperative quests, or public matchmaking.
- Platforms and cross-play: Confirm the supported console and cross-platform features for the specific game; availability on several systems does not prove players can play together.
Best console MMO picks for different play styles
Final Fantasy XIV: best for story-first MMORPG play
Final Fantasy XIV is the strongest fit here if you want a traditional MMORPG built around a substantial story and organized group content. Square Enix lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S support, alongside features including party-finding, Free Companies, dungeons, trials, and raids. Its current Complete Edition listing includes content through Dawntrail. Square Enix’s Complete Edition page says editions other than the Free Trial require an active paid subscription.
For Xbox players, the launch history matters: Xbox Wire reported on February 21, 2024 that the game’s Xbox open beta was underway and that progress would carry over to the full release. That article described the Free Trial at the time as covering A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, and Stormblood through level 70. It also described Duty Support, which lets players run main-story dungeons with NPC allies. Those are 2024 details; the trial’s current scope may differ.

The Elder Scrolls Online: best for Tamriel and solo/co-op flexibility
If the world of Skyrim is the draw, The Elder Scrolls Online offers a recognizable route into Tamriel with room to alternate between solo exploration and quests with friends. PlayStation’s editorial describes it as an unofficial follow-up to Skyrim and highlights both ways of playing. That makes it a useful choice for players who want an online fantasy world without making every session a group commitment. PlayStation’s MMO and MMORPG feature is an editorial overview rather than an independent comparative ranking.
Black Desert Online: best for real-time combat and varied activities
Black Desert Online stands out for combining combat and large-scale social play with activities beyond fighting. PlayStation’s overview lists guilds and siege warfare, as well as farming, trading, horse training, fishing, sailing, crafting, and cooking. It is a fit for players who want a broad activity menu alongside action combat, rather than a game chosen solely for its story or dungeon structure. The breadth of activities is a feature description, not a claim that every player will prefer its combat or progression.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Warframe: best for cooperative action, with a genre caveat
Warframe is an online action game and a strong cooperative alternative, but it is not a conventional MMORPG. Its official guide documents cross-platform missions, squads, and public matchmaking across PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. If fast action and joining other players matter more to you than classic MMORPG systems, it belongs on the shortlist. See the official Warframe cross-platform guide for the documented features and platform details.
Other console options in PlayStation’s MMO list
PlayStation’s editorial also covers Fallout 76, DC Universe Online, Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, and World of Tanks. They broaden the options beyond the four picks above, but they do not all represent the same kind of game. Check each title’s current platform listing and multiplayer features before choosing; the PlayStation list is a useful starting point, not a current cross-play or service-status guarantee.

What the 2024 console news does—and does not—tell you
Final Fantasy XIV’s Xbox beta was a dated milestone
Xbox Wire’s February 2024 report also attributed a community figure of over 30 million adventurers to Final Fantasy XIV. That is a publisher/platform-reported figure from 2024, not a current active-player count, so it should not be used to rank today’s console communities.
Throne and Liberty was announced for Xbox in 2024
Xbox Wire’s June 21, 2024 article announced a planned September 17, 2024 launch for Throne and Liberty on Xbox Series X|S, with cross-platform play support. The announcement is historical: it does not establish the game’s service status or availability in October 2026. In that article, Amazon Games Globalization Design Manager Daniel Lafuente said the team wanted to welcome both new and veteran MMO players, noting that console players’ first-time experience would be important. Treat that as the developer’s stated design goal, not a guarantee of any particular experience.
Check current availability before you download
Console support, free-trial scope, cross-play features, and live-service status can change. This guide is focused on 2024-era recommendations and dated 2024 announcements; confirm the game’s current console store listing and official platform documentation before installing, especially if you need cross-play with friends on another system. No current population comparison is established here, so the picks are based on documented play styles and features rather than player-count rankings.
