Wizards of the Coast’s current Commander format page says players choose “a legendary creature or artifact” to serve as their commander. That wording supports using a legendary artifact, but it does not mean every artifact qualifies: check the card’s type, format legality, color identity, and your play group’s rules.
What Wizards’ current Commander guidance says
The official Commander format page describes the choice this way: “you choose a legendary creature or artifact to serve as your commander.” On that current page, a legendary artifact is expressly included in the stated commander options.
The phrase is specifically “legendary creature or artifact.” It is not a general permission for any artifact, and the page’s short description does not spell out every edge case involving card types. If a card’s eligibility is unclear, check its current card information and ask the people running your game before building around it.
Why older rules references may seem to disagree
Some older Wizards release notes use narrower wording. The Commander Masters release notes say: “A legendary noncreature card can’t be chosen as your deck’s commander unless it has that ability.” The Commander Legends release notes use similar guidance.

Those statements are older release-note wording; the current Commander format page uses the broader phrase “legendary creature or artifact.” The sources do not establish that the older notes were formally amended, so treat them as older guidance rather than silently combining them with the current page.
Check these details before choosing a legendary artifact
Confirm the card is legal for your game
The format page describes Commander deck construction and says cards are drawn from across Magic’s history subject to its deck-building rules and card legality. Check the specific card against current Commander legality and any rules your group uses; the example below is not a claim that it is currently legal.

Build around its color identity
Every card in the deck must fit within the commander’s color identity. Wizards explains that identity can be affected by mana symbols in a card’s casting cost and rules text; colorless cards are allowed. Review the particular artifact rather than assuming that all legendary artifacts have the same identity.
Account for the command zone
The commander starts face up in the command zone. Under the current format page’s summary, casting it from there costs its normal cost plus two mana for each previous time it was cast from the command zone that game. That page also describes an option to put the commander in the command zone when it would go to its owner’s hand, library, graveyard, or exile.

Know how commander damage works
A player loses after taking 21 or more combat damage from the same commander over the game, according to Wizards’ current Commander page.

Wizards’ Commander Masters release notes identify The Great Henge as a “Legendary Artifact.” It is therefore a useful example of the card type discussed here. That identification alone does not confirm the card’s current Commander legality or settle every card-specific question; check its current status and rules text before using it as a commander.
