Usually, no: an individual Minecraft Java mod normally goes in the mods folder as a compatible .jar file, not as an ordinary .zip. A ZIP may instead be a modpack archive or another kind of Minecraft content, each with its own installation method. Check what the file is before moving or extracting it.
What kind of Minecraft file is it?
The extension alone does not tell you how to install a download. For Fabric on Java Edition, the standard individual mod file is a .jar. Fabric’s installation guide says to move mod JARs into the profile’s mods folder. An ordinary ZIP is not made into a mod by placing it there.

CurseForge’s support guidance describes modpack installation as a launcher workflow, separate from installing one mod. Its app lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla as game types; Vanilla is the base game without a mod loader. A mod or pack must be compatible with the loader and game version you select. How to install an individual Java mod
- Check the download page. Confirm the file is for Java Edition, your exact Minecraft version, and the loader installed on your selected profile. Compatibility with one version or loader does not guarantee compatibility with another.
- Check dependencies. Read the mod’s installation notes and install any required, compatible dependencies. Fabric notes that the majority of Fabric mods require Fabric API.
- Move the JAR into the right profile’s
modsfolder. Fabric documents these default paths: Windows%appdata%.minecraftmods, macOS~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods, and Linux~/.minecraft/mods. A third-party launcher may use a different game directory, so follow its documentation. - Launch the matching profile. If the mod does not appear or the game fails to start, verify the profile, loader, Minecraft version, JAR file, and dependencies.
These steps reflect Fabric Documentation’s Installing Mods guide; other loaders and launchers may have their own requirements.

What to do with a ZIP download
- Check the page where you downloaded it to see whether it is labeled a modpack, resource pack, datapack, configuration, or another kind of file.
- If it is a modpack ZIP, use a launcher’s import or install option for that pack format rather than putting the ZIP in
mods. For CurseForge’s documented workflow, check that the archive containsmanifest.json. - If it is another content type, follow that content’s installation instructions. Do not assume that extracting every file into
modsis correct.
Do not rename a ZIP to .jar. The extension change does not turn one file type into another. Similarly, do not unzip or repackage a mod JAR unless its own instructions say to do so; use the file as distributed.
Why a mod may not show up or load
- Wrong file: You may have a modpack export or another ZIP rather than an individual mod JAR.
- Wrong loader or game version: Make sure the mod, installed loader, and selected Minecraft profile match. CurseForge notes that not all mods and versions work with every loader.
- Missing dependency: Check the mod’s listed requirements, including whether it needs Fabric API.
- Wrong game directory: Third-party launchers may store profiles and their
modsfolders outside the default Minecraft paths.

Does this apply to Bedrock Edition?
No. The folder guidance above is for Fabric mods on Java Edition, and it should not be treated as Bedrock add-on instructions. Use documentation for the Bedrock content and platform you have instead.
