Can You Use Nexus Mods on Steam Games?

Nexus Mods can work with some Steam games, but support depends on the game, mod, operating system, and installation method.

Yes—some Steam games can be modded with Nexus Mods, but compatibility depends on the specific game, mod, and installation method. A game being installed through Steam does not guarantee that Vortex or a particular mod will support it. Check the game’s Vortex support and the mod’s own requirements before installing.

How to check whether your Steam game is supported

  1. Identify the exact game and setup. Note the game edition and your operating system; support can depend on both.
  2. Check Vortex’s game support. Nexus Mods describes Vortex as its mod manager and publishes information about supported games and game-specific extensions. Look up your title in the Vortex overview and its linked support materials. A general claim that Vortex supports many games is not confirmation that your particular title is supported.
  3. Read the mod page carefully. Check the required game version, dependencies, installation location, and whether the author calls for Vortex, manual installation, or extra steps.
  4. Follow the game-specific setup instructions. If you use Vortex, let it locate the Steam installation and follow the relevant extension’s deployment guidance. Requirements can differ by game: for example, the Cyberpunk 2077 Vortex support page says the game and Vortex staging folder need to be on the same drive for deployment. That condition is specific to that setup, not a universal Nexus Mods rule.

What can prevent a mod from working?

  • No support for the game or installation method: The title may not be covered by Vortex, or a mod may require a different installation process.
  • Version or dependency mismatch: A mod can be outdated, incompatible with your installed game version, or dependent on files or tools you have not installed.
  • Deployment or folder constraints: A game extension may specify where the staging folder must be located or how files are deployed. Follow the instructions for that title rather than assuming one setup applies to every game.

If you moved your Steam library

After moving a Steam installation, Vortex may need to find the game again and restore mod deployment. A 2019 Nexus Mods forum discussion recommends purging deployed links before moving, then rescanning and redeploying. This is dated community advice, not a guarantee that the same steps fit every current Vortex version or game. Check current Vortex guidance for your setup before changing deployment.

What about Linux or Steam Deck?

Support is specific to the game and workflow. For example, the Event Horizon extension listing names Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck through Proton, for its listed Bethesda games and requires hardlink deployment. That listing does not establish that all Nexus Mods downloads or Vortex setups work on Steam Deck. Verify the operating system, supported games, and deployment requirements on the relevant extension and mod pages.

Does Steam endorse Nexus Mods?

The available compatibility information establishes that some Steam-installed games can be managed or modded through Nexus Mods workflows; it does not establish that Steam endorses every third-party mod or that every Steam game is compatible. Treat each game and mod as a separate compatibility check.
