Yes—a Minecraft librarian can offer an Efficiency V enchanted book, but whether it can appear depends on the edition, version, and whether the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment is enabled.
How to get Efficiency V from a librarian
Librarians trade enchanted books for emeralds. If a librarian offers an Efficiency V book, buy it and use an anvil to apply it to a compatible tool. Efficiency increases block-breaking speed when applied to a pickaxe, shovel, axe, or hoe. Microsoft Learn’s enchantments guide describes librarian book trades, anvil use, and the tools that benefit from Efficiency.
Why your edition and world settings matter
Minecraft has two relevant trade configurations: ordinary villager trading and the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment. The experiment changes librarian offers and makes them biome-dependent, so a method that works in one configuration may not apply to another.
| Configuration | What to know about librarian books |
|---|---|
| Ordinary trading | Librarians can trade enchanted books. The official sources cited here do not establish the complete current Efficiency V offer pool for every edition and version. |
| Villager Trade Rebalance enabled | Offers depend on biome. The official notes describe biome-specific librarian enchantments, but do not establish a complete current Efficiency V availability table for both editions. |
In the Java 1.20.2 notes, Mojang says the rebalance is an optional experiment with no effect on normal worlds. The Bedrock 1.20.30 notes likewise say its trade changes must be enabled from the Experiments menu. Java 1.20.2 release notes and Bedrock 1.20.30 release notes explain those settings and the biome-based rules.

Check these details before trying to find the book
- Confirm whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- Check the exact game version and whether Villager Trade Rebalance is enabled in that world.
- If the experiment is enabled, account for the librarian’s biome-specific offers rather than relying on ordinary-trading advice.
Do not assume one reroll method or trade list applies universally. Java 26.1 notes document another change to librarian book-trade generation in the experiment, intended to ensure a book trade appears for master librarians. That is evidence that experimental trade behavior can vary by version; it is not a complete cross-edition list of which master-level book is Efficiency V. Java 26.1 release notes.

Once you have the Efficiency V enchanted book, combine it with the tool you want to enchant at an anvil. Efficiency is useful on a pickaxe, shovel, axe, or hoe; the right choice depends on which blocks you want to break faster.
