Not naturally, according to the standard Dungeons & Dragons rules. Dragonborn are described as visibly draconic, not as humans with a hidden dragon-like heritage. Magic can make a Dragonborn appear human: Alter Self physically changes their appearance, while Disguise Self creates an illusion. Neither option makes the character mechanically human.
What does a Dragonborn look like by default?
The 2024 Dragonborn species description calls Dragonborn “wingless, bipedal dragons,” with scales, horns, and other features tied to their draconic ancestry. Their coloration and features can vary with their ancestry, but the standard description does not give them an ordinary human form.
The 2014 description similarly presents Dragonborn as dragons standing upright in humanoid form, with visible draconic traits. A DM may allow a character-specific exception or a setting may depict Dragonborn differently, but that is not the standard species description in either rules edition.
How can a Dragonborn appear human?
The 2024 rules offer two distinct approaches. Alter Self changes the caster’s physical appearance; Disguise Self creates an illusion. Both can produce a human-looking appearance, but their limits differ.

Choose Alter Self for a physical change
For a bipedal Dragonborn who wants to look human while remaining the same character mechanically, the 2024 Alter Self appearance option is the clearest of these two choices. It permits an appearance belonging to another species, but the character keeps their statistics and must stay within the spell’s size and basic-shape limits.
Choose Disguise Self for an illusion
Disguise Self can make a Dragonborn look human, including by changing the apparent look of their gear. It is not a physical transformation: close physical inspection can reveal the illusion under the spell’s stated procedure. It is therefore a less reliable choice when someone is likely to touch or examine the disguise.

Does looking human make the character human?
No. An appearance change is not a species change. In particular, the 2024 Alter Self text explicitly preserves the caster’s statistics. A human-looking Dragonborn remains the same Dragonborn character for game rules unless some separate rule or effect changes that.

The core distinction remains the same in both editions: Dragonborn are described as visibly draconic, and these spells provide ways to alter or disguise appearance. Use the spell wording for the edition your campaign has adopted. One wording difference is that the 2014 Alter Self text refers to appearing as another “race,” while the 2024 text uses “species.” The 2014 Disguise Self, like its 2024 counterpart, is an illusion that can be exposed by physical inspection.

The reviewed standard species and spell rules do not establish an innate Dragonborn ability to become human. A different magical effect, a setting-specific rule, or a DM-approved character option could provide an exception, but it should not be assumed from the Dragonborn species entry alone.
