Yes—two Steam Family members can play the same game at the same time only if the family has two copies of it. With one copy, only one person can play that title at a time. Steam’s example is Portal 2: to play it simultaneously, another family member needs to purchase a copy.
How Steam Families handles shared game copies
Steam Families is the current system, replacing the older Steam Family Sharing and Family View features. An eligible game owned by a family member can appear in the family library, but ownership stays with the person who bought it. A family library is not a way to turn one purchased copy into multiple simultaneous-use licenses. If the family has one copy of a game, one member can play it while others choose a different available family game or wait for that copy to become free.
What happens when a game is already in use?
If the family owns multiple copies, a player can choose which member’s copy to use. If the selected copy is occupied, Steam may launch another available family copy. If no other copy is available, the player must wait or obtain another copy.

When choosing between copies, check whether they include different DLC: switching to a copy with different downloadable content can affect whether a save works. Save behavior varies by game.
Check whether the game can be shared
Family access depends on the game’s eligibility, not just whether a family member owns it. Steam identifies several exclusions and compatibility limits:

- Games that require a third-party key, account, or subscription may not be shareable.
- Free-to-play games and purchased DLC for free-to-play games are excluded from sharing.
- Region restrictions, operating-system incompatibility, or a publisher opting out can prevent access.
- A game its owner has marked private is not shared with the family.
Eligibility can change if a publisher opts out. DLC access also depends on whether the publisher has made that content shareable. Achievements are recorded on each player’s own Steam account. Choose the right option for your situation

Family membership and account safety
Adults can leave a Steam Family, but generally must wait one year from joining their previous family before creating or joining another. Steam says a person may rejoin their last family without that wait if it has an open place. Steam also considers account activity when deciding whether members are from the same household.
