You cannot cancel an active truce early through ordinary game rules in Stellaris. Wait for its 10-year timer to expire; then you can declare war only if you have an eligible casus belli and your policies and federation rules allow it. This guidance reflects the version-labeled Stellaris v4.4.6 warfare reference.
Can you break or cancel a truce in Stellaris?
No. A truce is an automatic post-diplomacy restriction, not a pact with a cancel button. The version-labeled Stellaris v4.4.6 warfare reference says truces cannot be broken under ordinary game rules and last 10 years. There is no normal diplomatic action that removes the timer early.
During the truce, the game blocks declarations of war against that empire and grants open borders between the truce partners. Open borders therefore do not mean you are free to attack. Check the diplomacy interface for the active truce and its expiry rather than relying on border access alone. The community diplomacy reference describes these effects.
What to do while the truce runs
Use the waiting period to prepare for the date the restriction ends. A casus belli is required to start a war, and it determines the war goals available to you, so the end of the truce does not guarantee that you can immediately attack.

- Choose the war goal you want and make sure you can establish the corresponding casus belli.
- Review your War Philosophy policy and any federation rules governing declarations of war.
- Plan your fleets, economy, allies, and access to the target’s borders.
- Check the truce timer in diplomacy so your plans match the actual expiry.
The warfare reference covers casus belli, war goals, and declaration rules for v4.4.6. Federation and policy restrictions may still prevent a declaration after the truce expires.
Why ending another pact does not remove a truce
Do not confuse a truce with a non-aggression pact, defensive pact, guarantee, federation relationship, or subject relationship. Ending certain pacts or changing federation or subject ties can itself trigger a new 10-year truce, according to the diplomacy reference. Those actions are not shortcuts for cancelling an existing truce and may leave you waiting again.

How peace and total wars affect the answer
Status quo peace
A status quo ends a war under its own settlement terms; for example, fully occupied claimed systems may transfer. It does not provide a way to cancel the truce that follows.
Total war
Total wars have different end conditions: surrender is unavailable, and the war ends through status quo or the destruction of an empire. Those rules change how the war concludes, not whether you can manually break a subsequent truce.
