There is no evidence-backed graphics preset that is best for every PC running Total War: WARHAMMER III. Use the game’s benchmark to establish a baseline, then change one setting group at a time and compare the results on your own system. SEGA Support specifically recommends checking detail and shadow settings in its Total War: Performance FAQ, updated 5 March 2026.
Start with a benchmark, not a preset
A graphics setting can affect one PC differently from another, depending on hardware, resolution, and the workload. SEGA also notes that system configurations and expectations vary. Rather than assuming a preset will fix performance, compare runs using the game’s campaign or battle benchmark.
- From the main menu, open Settings > Graphics > Advanced.
- Run a campaign or battle benchmark with your current settings and note the result and any visible stutter.
- Change one setting group at a time, then run the same benchmark again. Compare both smoothness and image quality.
- Give particular attention to detail and shadow settings, which SEGA calls out in its performance guidance.
No game-specific published FPS gains for individual graphics settings are established in the cited official sources, so treat your own benchmark results—not an unverified percentage—as the basis for a change.
Identify what “lag” means on your PC
Low FPS, intermittent stutters, freezes, long loading screens, and slow campaign end turns are different problems. A graphics adjustment may help rendered FPS, but it is not a general remedy for every delay.

- Low or uneven FPS during battles: benchmark graphics changes, including detail and shadows.
- Repeated stutters: check available system memory, background applications, and whether the game is paging.
- Freezes or trouble after an update: test without mods and verify game files if update-related problems persist.
- Long loading screens: check storage and drive health; storage changes address loading time, not a proven in-game FPS increase.
- Slow campaign end turns: distinguish these from battle FPS. Update 9.0 includes a campaign end-turn optimization, but that is not an FPS claim.
Work through common causes of stutters and FPS drops
Test without mods after an update
Temporarily disable mods and check whether the problem remains. Creative Assembly also recommends disabling mods when performance or stability issues appear after a release. If the issue began with an update and persists without mods, verify the game files.
Update drivers and check software conflicts
SEGA advises keeping system drivers current, especially GPU drivers, keeping Windows current, and checking whether third-party software conflicts with the game. BIOS updates carry more risk: SEGA warns that an incorrect update can leave a computer nonfunctional, so do not attempt one unless you understand the process and your system’s requirements.
Check system memory and VRAM pressure
SEGA says that having less than 1 GB of free system memory while the game and other applications are running may cause paging and repeated stutters. Check memory use in Task Manager and close unnecessary background applications before testing again.
Insufficient video memory (VRAM) can cause the game to downgrade settings automatically during loading. Higher resolution also increases VRAM demand, so try a lower resolution if VRAM appears to be the limit. The game’s “Unlimited Video Memory” option is presented by SEGA as a way to bypass automatic downgrading, not as a general performance optimization.

Understand resolution scale and FSR
At a resolution scale below 100%, the game upscales the 3D image. Feral Interactive says the default upscaling method is Contrast Adaptive Sharpening. Enabling AMD FSR 1.0 can improve the quality of the upscaled 3D image, but it is more demanding and can cost performance. At 100% scale or above, neither upscaling method is used. This is a quality-versus-performance tradeoff; FSR 1.0 here should not be confused with later FSR versions. See Feral’s Total War: WARHAMMER III FAQs.
For laptops, check power and cooling
SEGA notes that laptops may limit CPU or GPU power, or crash, when cooling is inadequate. For a laptop that slows down or becomes unstable during demanding play:
- Run it plugged into mains power; battery operation can restrict available power.
- Check the manufacturer’s cooling controls and fan-curve options.
- Consider an FPS limiter to reduce demand if temperatures or cooling are a concern.
These steps are not a guarantee against thermal throttling, and a cooling accessory cannot be assumed to solve it.
Separate loading time from in-game performance
SEGA recommends installing the game on an SSD or M.2 drive for shorter loading times and checking drive health and free space. This is relevant if the game is on a mechanical drive and loading is slow; the cited guidance does not establish that an SSD raises in-game FPS.

What Update 9.0 changes—and what it does not
Creative Assembly’s Update 9.0 release notes, posted 22 September and amended 24 September 2026, report campaign end-turn times reduced by up to 30%. The notes attribute the work to several optimizations, including a change to the VFX system that reduces overall CPU cost. The figure is about campaign end turns, not battle FPS, and is not a blanket performance uplift for every system.
The same notes also describe fixes for some flickering and excessive motion blur with TAA, and improvements to reduce unit ghosting and blur. These are specific graphics fixes, not evidence of a universal FPS increase. See the Update 9.0 Release Notes.
Check your PC against the listed requirements
Steam’s current listing gives different minimum and recommended requirements by operating system. The figures below are the Windows requirements shown on Steam; they are not guarantees of a particular FPS or graphics quality.
| Windows requirement | Memory | Listed graphics |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 6 GB RAM | GTX 900 series or RX 400 series |
| Recommended | 8 GB RAM | GTX 1660 Ti, RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A750 |
For other operating systems, consult Steam’s current system requirements listing rather than applying the Windows figures.
