No. The Nintendo Switch OLED cannot play Nintendo 3DS games, whether you own them on a cartridge or bought them digitally. To play 3DS software, you need a Nintendo 3DS-family console.
Why can’t Switch OLED play 3DS games?
The Switch OLED is part of the Nintendo Switch family, which is not backwards compatible with games from earlier Nintendo platforms. Nintendo’s Switch FAQ says Switch OLED, Switch, and Switch Lite do not include backwards compatibility with previous Nintendo systems. Nintendo Support also answers directly that 3DS software cannot be played on Switch, including the OLED model. Nintendo’s support guidance covers both packaged and downloaded titles.

That means a 3DS cartridge will not work in the Switch OLED, and a digital 3DS purchase will not run on it either. There is no Switch accessory or cartridge reader identified by Nintendo as a way to add 3DS compatibility.
Do 3DS eShop purchases transfer to Switch?
No. Nintendo says games purchased through the 3DS and Wii U eShops do not carry over to Switch, and that Switch cannot play physical or digital games designed for older consoles. Redownloading an old purchase to a 3DS-family system is separate from transferring it to Switch. Nintendo Support explains the transfer limitation.

What can you play on Switch OLED?
The Switch OLED plays Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo describes it as compatible with the full Nintendo Switch game library, while noting that it may not fit all Nintendo Labo designs and that some experiences can differ because of hardware capabilities such as its larger screen. Those qualifications apply to Switch games; they do not provide support for 3DS titles. Nintendo’s Switch system comparison lists the compatibility details.

Nintendo stopped accepting new purchases through the 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. Previously purchased titles can still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future, according to Nintendo’s purchase support page; this is not a promise of indefinite availability.
