Can You Use Spell Slots From Other Classes in D&D 5e?

Multiclass spell slots can generally cast eligible spells from another class in both 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e, but spell access remains class-specific.

Yes. Under both the 2014 and 2024 D&D 5e multiclass rules, a character can generally use a spell slot from one class to cast an eligible spell known or prepared through another class. The slot pool does not give you access to additional spells: each class’s rules still determine which spells you can know or prepare.

How multiclass spell slots work

If your character has the Spellcasting feature from more than one class, use the multiclass rules for your edition to determine the shared Spellcasting slots. The calculation is based on the relevant class levels, not on treating each class’s slots as separate pools. The two editions use different wording and progression details, so follow one edition’s rules consistently.

The 2014 rules explain that each spell you know or prepare is associated with one of your classes, and you use that class’s spellcasting ability to cast it. The 2024 rules state that multiclass slots can be used “to cast spells of an appropriate level from any class whose Spellcasting feature you have.” See the official 2014 multiclassing rules and 2024 multiclassing rules.

Can I use wizard slots for cleric spells?

When you have Spellcasting from both Wizard and Cleric, you can use a slot from the shared multiclass Spellcasting pool to cast a wizard or cleric spell that you are eligible to cast. The spell remains associated with the class through which you know or prepared it, so use that class’s spellcasting ability.

Having a slot of a particular level does not mean you can prepare a spell of that level. Check your wizard and cleric spell access separately under each class’s rules; the shared slot pool only supplies a resource for casting spells you already know or have prepared.

Can Warlock spell slots cast another class’s spells?

Yes, if your character has both Warlock’s Pact Magic and another class’s Spellcasting feature. The 2014 rules expressly permit Pact Magic slots to cast spells known or prepared from Spellcasting classes, and Spellcasting slots to cast warlock spells you know. The spell must still meet the relevant conditions for the class that grants it. The official rule is in the 2014 multiclassing rules.

Do not assume Pact Magic and Spellcasting are one interchangeable pool for every purpose: apply the specific interaction stated by the rules for the edition you are playing. For 2024 wording on spell slots, see the official Spell Slots rules.

Can a higher-level multiclass slot let me learn a higher-level spell?

No. A higher-level slot can cast a lower-level spell you are otherwise allowed to cast, but the slot does not independently let you learn or prepare a higher-level spell. Spell access is determined by your level and spell rules in the class granting that spell, while slot level is determined by your applicable slot progression.

If a spell has an additional effect when cast using a higher-level slot, you can use that benefit when you cast it with an appropriate higher-level slot. The general spellcasting rules explain how slots are used to cast spells; consult the relevant edition’s 2014 Spellcasting rules or 2024 Spells rules.

A quick way to check a multiclass cast

  1. Identify the feature and edition. Check whether the character has Spellcasting from multiple classes, or both Spellcasting and Pact Magic, and use the rules version at your table.
  2. Determine the available slot. For multiple Spellcasting classes, calculate the shared slots using that edition’s multiclass progression. Follow the specific Pact Magic interaction if the character is also a warlock.
  3. Check the spell’s class and access. Confirm the spell is known or prepared through the class that grants it, and use that class’s spellcasting ability.
  4. Check slot eligibility and effects. Make sure the slot is appropriate for the spell. If the spell benefits from being cast at a higher level, apply that effect when its rules allow.

If your character has the Spellcasting feature from only one class and does not rely on the multiclass procedure, follow that class’s normal spellcasting rules instead.
