Its main trade-off is the single forward: if the midfield and wide players do not advance to help, the striker can become isolated or outnumbered.

A formation-specific guide describes the midfielders moving forward in possession and the fullbacks adding depth, while the midfield line closes central spaces out of possession. Those are tactical interpretations, not guaranteed in-game outcomes. Use them as a way to think about the shape: provide support around the striker without leaving the flanks or space behind the fullbacks exposed. The formation guide offers one such analysis.
Recommended 4-5-1 (2) custom tactics
Start with Balanced build-up and a Balanced defensive approach. This is a conservative baseline for testing how your team connects; available evidence does not establish one approach or defensive line height as objectively optimal. Consider a more aggressive defensive approach only if your defenders can cover space behind the line and you are comfortable defending transitions manually.

How to choose roles that work together
Anchor the midfield before adding runners
Give one of the three central midfielders a Holding or Deep-Lying Playmaker role with Defend Focus as a starting point. This creates a central presence behind the more adventurous midfielders. For the remaining two, Box-to-Box — Balanced is the more two-way direction; Playmaker — Attack or Roaming is an option when you want an additional advanced outlet. Match these choices to the players in your squad rather than assigning roles by position alone.

Decide whether the flanks should hold width or attack inside
Wide Midfielder and Winger are options when you want the LM/RM to contribute to width; Inside Forward is for inward attacking runs. Think about the fullbacks at the same time: if they are providing width, an Inside Forward may offer a different route into the attack. If your fullbacks are staying conservative, wide roles can help prevent the attack from narrowing too much.
Make the striker’s job fit the support around them
The lone striker needs to connect with the midfield and wide players as well as finish chances. Advanced Forward with Support or Complete is a reasonable starting direction when you want a link between midfield and attack; Attack is an option when runs behind are the priority. EA also lists Poacher, False 9 and Target Forward at ST, so the role menu offers alternatives for different player profiles. Whatever you choose, watch whether the striker is receiving support rather than repeatedly being left alone.

What Roles and Focus mean in FC 25
FC IQ is EA’s tactical and positional system for FC 25. Player Roles guide off-ball behavior, while a Focus modifies a role. EA describes Role Familiarity as an indication of a player’s proficiency in a role, which can help you decide whom to select. In EA’s words, “Player Roles guide how every player thinks, behaves, and moves off the ball.”
EA says formations determine which positions and roles are available, and that roles affect alignment both with and without the ball. At launch, EA listed 31 Roles and 52 Role-and-Focus combinations. FC 25 replaced the Work Rates and Player Instructions terminology used in earlier games, so build your setup around the current Role and Focus labels rather than assuming older instruction names map directly onto them.

Save alternatives for different match states
EA documents support for up to five custom tactics, each with its own formation, tactical settings and Player Roles. That lets you keep the 4-5-1 (2) baseline and prepare alternatives for situations such as needing more width, protecting a lead or pursuing a goal. You can activate a different tactic in-game.
EA’s tactic codes encode a formation, build-up style, defensive approach and selected roles and focuses. EA says the code system is universal across game modes, platforms and generations. Import a code through the custom tactics menu if you have one you trust, but do not assume an unverified code is tested or still suitable for your squad.

What to watch for when you test the setup
- The striker is isolated: try a more supportive striker role or make sure at least one central midfielder or wide player is advancing to connect with them.
- The attack is too narrow: use a wider LM/RM role or ask a fullback to contribute more width, while considering the defensive space that choice leaves behind.
- The middle feels exposed: keep a Holding or Deep-Lying Playmaker role on Defend and reduce how many other midfielders are committed forward.
- Your players do not suit their roles: use Role Familiarity and squad strengths to guide selection, then change the role rather than forcing a player into an unsuitable job.
There is no controlled comparison or measured win-rate evidence establishing this as the best-performing 4-5-1 (2) setup. Treat it as a balanced framework to adapt to your squad and play style, not a guaranteed competitive meta.
