An older accepted answer on EA Forums says downpatching is not possible, but it is community guidance—not a current official EA policy statement. If you mean recovering progress or fixing problems after a patch, there are separate options: recover an earlier save, or troubleshoot the current installation. Neither changes the game’s installed version.
What do you mean by “reverse” an update?
There are three different outcomes players may mean. They do not use the same method:

Can you install an older Sims 4 patch?
The clearest direct answer in the available sources is an older accepted reply in an EA Forums discussion titled “Downgrade the game?” Community helper puzzlezaddict wrote, “Nope, sorry, there’s no way to downpatch.” That is useful community guidance, but it is not a current official EA statement covering every platform and launcher. The sources do not establish a supported way to return an updated installation to a previous game build.
EA’s update notes dated September 22, 2026 list PC version 1.128.90.1030, Mac version 1.128.90.1230, and console version 2.39 for that update. These are identifiers for the named update, not a guarantee that they remain the latest versions indefinitely. The notes do not provide a rollback procedure.

How to recover an earlier save
If the update is not the issue and you want to undo recent gameplay, EA’s supported recovery flow lets you choose an earlier save point. This changes which progress you load, not the installed game version.
- From the main menu, choose Load Game.
- Select the save slot you want to restore.
- Choose Recover Save.
- Select a listed save point and confirm the recovery.
EA says manual save slots retain several recent save points. The single Autosave slot is overwritten each time another autosave occurs, so older Autosaves cannot be recovered. If the point you need is not listed, this recovery feature cannot restore it.

What to try if the game is broken after updating
These steps address the current installation or user data; they are not a way to reinstall an earlier patch. Back up your user folder before resetting or moving files.

Back up and isolate user files
Copy Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 to a safe location before troubleshooting. EA’s backup and reset guidance describes restoring folders or individual saves to help identify a problem file. Work with copies where possible so you do not overwrite the only version of a save.
Repair the installation through its managing launcher
EA Forums guidance describes using Repair for an EA app-managed PC installation and file verification for a Steam-managed installation. Use the launcher that manages your copy; these options check or replace game files rather than choosing a previous game version. The detailed launcher advice is forum guidance, not a rollback instruction from EA Help.

Check mods and custom content
A patch can leave mods or custom content needing attention. If you use them, test the game without them or in batches to narrow down the cause. EA’s September 22, 2026 update notes direct mod users to its Mods & Game Updates Guide. Removing or testing mods can help diagnose trouble, but it does not reverse the patch.

Does Legacy Edition let you downgrade?
No. EA says The Sims 4: Legacy Edition stopped being available on PC and Mac on December 12, 2022. Its guidance concerns compatibility with older systems; it is not a way to return an updated game to an earlier patch. See EA’s Legacy Edition information.
