How to get Thorns III from a villager
- Find or create a librarian villager.
- Inspect its enchanted-book trade for a Thorns III book. Librarians trade enchanted books for emeralds, but no particular price or universal offer is established. Microsoft’s Minecraft Creator documentation describes librarian enchanted-book trades.
- Put the Thorns III book and a chestplate into an anvil to apply the enchantment. Thorns deals damage to an attacker when the wearer takes damage, and chestplates are eligible items, according to the same Minecraft documentation.
Does the librarian’s biome matter?
Usually, inspect the trade rather than assuming a particular biome is required. Mojang described biome-specific librarian books as an experimental Bedrock feature in the Bedrock 1.20.30 update notes; the experiment must be enabled, and librarians from different biomes sell different books.

In the experimental arrangement described in Mojang’s Bedrock Preview 1.20.30.20 notes, Thorns was assigned as a special book to desert librarians. Those 2023 preview notes do not establish that the rule is enabled by default or applies to every current Minecraft edition and version. If you have enabled that Bedrock experiment, try a desert librarian; otherwise, check the book trade directly.
