No. A Bedrock Edition player cannot join a Java Edition Realm through Minecraft’s supported Realms system. Realms require the joining player and the Realm to use the same edition: Bedrock with a Bedrock Realm, or Java with a Java Realm.
Why Bedrock and Java Realms do not connect
Minecraft treats Java Edition and Bedrock Edition as separate multiplayer ecosystems. Its official Realms information describes cross-play within each edition family: Java players can play together across Windows, macOS, and Linux, while Bedrock cross-play is for supported Bedrock platforms. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements likewise state that Java players can only join Java-hosted games.
That means an invite does not bridge the edition gap. It is an access invitation, not a way to make a Bedrock client compatible with a Java Realm. The same matching-edition rule applies if you are trying to join from Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or mobile: those platforms use Bedrock Edition, not Java Edition.
Which edition do you need?
| Your situation | What to use |
|---|---|
| You are playing Bedrock Edition and want to join a friend’s Realm | A Bedrock Realm |
| You want to join an existing Java Realm | Java Edition on a supported computer platform: Windows, macOS, or Linux |
These pairings follow Minecraft’s current Realms edition and platform information. Check that page for the latest support details for a particular device.

How to check whether you have Java or Bedrock
- On a console: Minecraft’s Realms overview identifies console play as Bedrock.
- On a computer: Check the game’s loading screen. Minecraft’s edition comparison says “Java Edition” appears beneath the Minecraft logo when you are launching Java. If that label is absent, you are using Bedrock.
What an invite, or a console subscription, can and cannot do
A Realm invite is still useful once your edition matches the host’s Realm, but it cannot change compatibility. Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements list platform online-service requirements separately from edition requirements. A console online subscription may be needed for multiplayer on a particular platform; it does not let a Bedrock player enter a Java Realm.

What to do next
- If you are staying on Bedrock: Ask the host to use a Bedrock Realm, then join it with your Bedrock game.
- If you need to join the existing Java Realm: Launch Java Edition on a supported computer platform, then use the host’s invitation and joining instructions.
- If you are unsure which edition you have: Use the console or loading-screen checks above before troubleshooting the invite or multiplayer settings.
