Yes. A pumpkin can grow on mud, provided mud is beneath the empty block beside a mature pumpkin stem. Plant the pumpkin seeds on farmland—the stem does not grow on the mud.
How pumpkin growth works
Pumpkins grow in two parts: seeds produce a stem on farmland, and a mature stem can produce a pumpkin in a neighboring space. The block beneath that neighboring fruit space may be mud, so mud works as the pumpkin’s growing substrate. The Minecraft Wiki farming tutorial and its pumpkin-seed entry describe this arrangement.

Set up a pumpkin on mud
- Use pumpkin seeds on a farmland block to plant a stem.
- Leave at least one adjacent block empty, with mud directly beneath that space.
- Give the stem ample light. The farming tutorial specifies light level 9 in the stem block for growth, while another reference describes a minimum light level of 10 in the block above it. Avoid relying on a borderline light placement.
- Wait for the stem to mature, then for it to produce a pumpkin in the open adjacent space. If a neighboring space already contains a pumpkin, remove it before expecting that space to produce another.
Water and bone meal
Water is not required for pumpkin growth. Hydrating nearby farmland can improve growth rates, so water is an optional way to make the farm more efficient. Bone meal can speed up stem maturation, but it does not force a pumpkin to appear immediately.
Growth timing and Bedrock behavior
There is no guaranteed universal wait time: growth depends on game conditions, farm layout, and edition. The Minecraft Wiki tutorial gives a maximum rate of 1/3 per random block tick for a stem in its stated idealized arrangement and says average fruit generation takes around 272 seconds. These are source-specific game-mechanics figures, not promises of a fixed real-time harvest interval.

Bedrock farms can also behave differently in ways that affect efficiency. Mojang’s legacy bug tracker entry describes a behavior change in version 1.16: a stem chooses a random side first, then checks whether the selected space is suitable. The issue lists affected versions through 1.21.44 Hotfix and remains unresolved in the tracker, so layouts that offer several suitable fruit spaces may not produce at the same pace as a layout that relies on a single side. This does not change mud’s suitability beneath the fruit space.

If your pumpkin is not appearing
- Check the planting block: seeds need to be planted on farmland; mud belongs beneath an adjacent fruit space.
- Check stem maturity: an immature stem cannot produce fruit.
- Check the neighboring space: it must be empty, with mud directly underneath.
- Check the light: provide ample light around the stem rather than placing it at the minimum threshold.
- Allow for variation: water can help farmland hydration, but it is not a prerequisite, and no single harvest time applies to every setup or edition.
