Choose Nintendo Switch 2 for Nintendo’s library and a hybrid handheld/TV experience, Steam Deck OLED for a console-like way to play compatible games from your Steam library, a Windows handheld for access to PC storefronts, or a dedicated retro handheld for a focused collection of older games. Compare operating system, game compatibility, portability and tested battery life before treating screen size or raw specifications as a verdict.
Best handheld consoles at a glance
| Handheld | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo games and hybrid play | Pocket Tactics lists a 7.9-inch, 120Hz, 1080p LCD, 5,220mAh battery, 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The figures are from a buying guide, so confirm specifications and bundles with Nintendo before purchase. Source |
| Steam Deck OLED | Steam library in a console-like SteamOS environment | Pocket Tactics lists a 7.4-inch, 90Hz HDR OLED, 50Wh battery, 16GB RAM and 512GB or 1TB storage. Some games run poorly, according to TechRadar. Pocket Tactics; TechRadar |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Windows and access to PC storefronts | The X20 product page from ASUS lists Windows 11, a 7.4-inch OLED 1080p 120Hz display, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and an 80Wh battery. Tom’s Guide’s battery result for the separately identified ROG Xbox Ally X should not be assumed to describe every X20 configuration. ASUS |
| Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS | A larger-screen SteamOS handheld | Pocket Tactics lists an 8-inch, 120Hz IPS screen, 55.5Wh battery, 16GB or 32GB memory and 512GB or 1TB storage. Source |
| Super Pocket and other dedicated retro handhelds | Older games and a focused library | TechRadar highlights Super Pocket and its Evercade cartridge compatibility. Check that the supported games and format match what you want to play. Source |
Choose by game library and operating system
Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo games and hybrid play
Pick Switch 2 if Nintendo’s game library is the main reason you want a handheld and you value a system designed for both portable and TV play. Its listed 7.9-inch LCD runs at up to 120Hz and 1080p, but those specifications do not establish how a particular game looks or performs. Confirm the current Nintendo model, bundles and specifications before buying; the cited listing is from Pocket Tactics rather than Nintendo’s official product page.
Steam Deck OLED: Steam games with a console-like interface
Steam Deck OLED is a natural choice if you already own games on Steam and prefer a handheld built around SteamOS rather than a Windows desktop. Its 7.4-inch OLED screen is smaller than the Legion Go S’s listed 8-inch panel, but screen technology and size alone do not make one device better. Check compatibility for the specific games you expect to play: TechRadar cautions that some Steam games run poorly on the Deck.
Windows handhelds: broader PC storefront access
ROG Xbox Ally models use Windows and offer access to PC storefronts, which can suit players whose libraries are spread across services. The trade-off is that Windows handhelds are not interchangeable with SteamOS devices; confirm that the games, launchers and controls you rely on work as expected. ASUS’s X20 page gives specifications for that product, while Tom’s Guide’s battery result is for an ROG Xbox Ally X. Treat these as distinct descriptions, not a single guaranteed configuration.

Legion Go S with SteamOS: a larger SteamOS screen
The Legion Go S offers a listed 8-inch 120Hz IPS screen and SteamOS. It makes sense for someone who wants a larger display in a SteamOS handheld, but its larger screen does not settle questions of portability, game compatibility or runtime. Confirm the exact memory and storage configuration available in your region.
Dedicated retro handhelds: a narrower, older-game focus
A dedicated retro device may be a better fit than a PC handheld if your priority is a defined catalog of older games rather than broad PC storefront access. TechRadar points to the Super Pocket and Evercade cartridges. Before choosing one, check the supported titles and whether the required format is cartridge, preloaded software or another supported library; the cited guide does not establish that every retro game is supported.

How to compare screens, portability and storage
The cited guides give these screen specifications: Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch 120Hz 1080p LCD; Steam Deck OLED a 7.4-inch 90Hz OLED; ROG Xbox Ally X20 a 7.4-inch OLED 1080p 120Hz display; and Legion Go S a 8-inch 120Hz IPS screen. These are not a direct quality ranking. Think about the games you play, how much screen area you want to carry, and whether OLED or LCD better suits your preferences. A higher refresh rate or larger panel alone does not show which handheld is the right buy.
PC handhelds generally occupy more space than compact retro-focused devices, but the cited guides do not provide a consistent set of weights for comparing these models. If you expect to carry a device daily, compare the dimensions and weight of the exact regional configuration before purchase. Also check storage: the listed Switch 2 has 256GB, while Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go S configurations cited here range from 512GB to 1TB. The guides do not establish expansion options across every configuration, so verify them for the model you are considering.

Battery life: use test results as a comparison, not a promise
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 gaming tests reported the following average runtimes. These are that publisher’s results under its own methodology, not guaranteed usage times; game choice, settings and other conditions affect real-world battery life.
| Device tested by Tom’s Guide | Reported gaming runtime |
|---|---|
| Steam Deck OLED | 3 hours 12 minutes |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 2 hours 40 minutes |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | 2 hours 56 minutes |
| Lenovo Legion Go S (SteamOS) | 1 hour 45 minutes |
Source: Tom’s Guide, 2026. These results help frame the trade-off, but they are not a controlled guarantee for every game or configuration. If you regularly play away from an outlet, weigh expected runtime alongside portability and the games you want to run. A power bank is worth considering only if its output and compatibility meet the handheld’s requirements.

Check compatibility and current availability before buying
- List the games you want to play. For Nintendo exclusives, begin with Switch 2. For Steam purchases, check each game’s current compatibility on Steam Deck. For PC storefronts beyond Steam, confirm the launcher and game work on the specific Windows model.
- Decide where you will play. If TV play matters, prioritize the hybrid-console experience. If you will play only in your hands, compare size, weight, screen and controls on the exact device.
- Choose the operating system deliberately. SteamOS and Windows provide different experiences and compatibility paths. Do not assume a game or launcher behaves the same on both.
- Verify the exact configuration and local listing. Check current price, stock, storage, memory, bundles, operating-system version and regional availability with the retailer or manufacturer. Prices and bundles change, and the cited guides do not establish a current universal price.
Which handheld console should you buy?
- Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if Nintendo’s games and hybrid play are your priorities.
- Choose Steam Deck OLED if you want a SteamOS handheld for compatible games in your Steam library.
- Consider an ROG Xbox Ally model if Windows and broader PC storefront access are important, after checking the specific games and configuration.
- Consider Legion Go S with SteamOS if a larger-screen SteamOS handheld is a better fit for you.
- Choose a dedicated retro handheld if its supported older-game library and format match what you want to play.
