What changed in Black Ops 7 matchmaking?
The change unfolded in two stages. During the October 2025 beta, Treyarch tested Open Moshpit with skill consideration “drastically reduced” compared with the then-current multiplayer matchmaking system. Treyarch’s beta notes said: “At launch, Open Matchmaking with minimal skill consideration will be the default for Black Ops 7 Multiplayer.” The stated aim was to provide players with a more varied experience. In July 2026, GameSpot reported that Season 5 would introduce another system described as inspired by older Call of Duty games. The report named Black Ops Classic, Quick Play and Party Games as affected playlists, and said the existing Open playlist would remain available. GameSpot’s Season 5 report
That description establishes a reported rollout and playlist scope, not a technical specification. The report said Activision had not explained precisely how Open and Classic matchmaking differ.

Did Black Ops 7 bring SBMM back?
The available public details do not support a simple yes or no. Treyarch’s launch wording was “minimal skill consideration,” not no skill consideration. The later system was characterized in reporting as “classic-inspired,” but Activision did not publicly specify its skill weighting, algorithm or other matchmaking variables in that report.
It is therefore more accurate to describe Season 5 as adding a separate matchmaking option to named playlists than to say skill-based matchmaking was removed and then restored. The sources do not provide enough information to compare the Open and Classic systems quantitatively.

Comments in a Black Ops 7 Reddit discussion included confusion about which playlists were affected and individual reports of matches feeling sweatier, less balanced or otherwise frustrating. They do not establish how common dissatisfaction was or prove the Season 5 change caused any particular player’s match experience. No representative statistic measuring the scale of the outcry is established by the cited sources.

Activision’s general matchmaking research explains that skill is one of multiple factors used in Call of Duty matchmaking. Loosening skill constraints can allow a wider range of skill levels into a lobby, which may make matches less predictable. Its Matchmaking Series 2 paper gives an illustrative 12-player Team Deathmatch example: shifting one player from the 50th to the 80th percentile, described as a 0.1 increase in raw team skill, gives that player’s team a 70+% chance of winning.
