Reviews for Blasphemous 2 are broadly favorable, but the game’s punishing combat and deliberately cryptic story make it a better fit for some players than others. The scores below are for the 2023 sequel, not the original Blasphemous; the two games should not be treated as interchangeable.

What do reviews say about Blasphemous 2?

Critics generally respond well to the sequel’s combat, exploration, boss encounters and surreal world, while at least one review excerpt raises a reservation about combat. Metacritic’s page snapshot accessed in 2026 lists an 84/100 Metascore from 35 critic reviews, labeled “Generally Favorable.” It also shows an 8.2/10 user score from 534 ratings. These are changing platform snapshots, not permanent ratings. Metacritic’s Blasphemous 2 page includes the current displayed totals and review excerpts.

GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling awarded the PC version 9/10 in a review dated August 17, 2023. His assessment emphasizes robust combat, improved traversal and the series’ surreal art and world-building. That is one critic’s review, rather than a guarantee that every player will enjoy the same aspects. Read GameSpot’s review.

What are the main strengths—and the trade-offs?

Combat and difficulty

Combat is a central part of the appeal: GameSpot praised its robustness, and review excerpts collected by Metacritic point to memorable boss fights. The counterweight is difficulty. Some coverage describes battles as punishing, and a more critical excerpt found the combat unsatisfying despite enjoying other parts of the game. If you want a forgiving action-platformer, the challenge may be a drawback; if you enjoy demanding fights, it may be part of the draw.

With so much to see and do, the stories and myths you encounter will help you unpick the games myriad of secrets, granting you a deeper understanding of this strange new world

Traversal and exploration

GameSpot highlighted improved traversal, while the Steam listing describes a labyrinthine world with routes players can approach in different ways. The combination suggests a game that rewards exploring and learning how its spaces connect, rather than one focused only on moving from fight to fight. Steam’s store page describes the game and its features.

Art and atmosphere

The sequel’s surreal visual style and mysterious setting are among its most consistently noted attractions. GameSpot praised the return to the series’ distinctive art and world-building; Metacritic’s review excerpts also cite visual variety and a compelling world. This is a strong reason to consider the game if atmosphere matters as much to you as combat mechanics.

Story clarity

The Penitent One returns to a world threatened by the Miracle, but the sequel’s story follows the free Wounds of Eventide DLC for the original game. That continuity can make the premise and its lore harder to follow if you arrive without the earlier context. One critic excerpt describes the story as confounding at times. The game’s mystery is part of its identity, but it is not the clearest choice if you want straightforward storytelling.

Is Blasphemous 2 worth playing?

Consider it if you want a challenging action-platform adventure built around combat, exploration, boss encounters and a striking, strange world. Be more cautious if punishing fights frustrate you or you need a plainly explained story. The critical reception supports a favorable overall verdict, but the disagreements in review excerpts point to a real preference test: difficulty and narrative opacity are not minor details for players who dislike them.

How does the sequel relate to the original?

Blasphemous 2 is a separate 2023 sequel, not a new name for the original game. Its story continues after the original’s free Wounds of Eventide DLC, so a review of the sequel cannot answer whether the 2019 game suits you. This title-level review evidence is substantially stronger for the sequel; it does not establish a comparable critic score for the original. If you are choosing between them, check that a review or score names the installment you intend to buy.

What editions and post-launch content should buyers check?

Steam lists the base game, a Mea Culpa Edition and a Complete Sacrament Edition. The Complete Sacrament Edition includes the base game, digital artbook, Mea Culpa DLC and soundtrack; Steam also lists the DLC, artbook and soundtrack as add-ons. Storefront contents, prices and availability can vary by region, so confirm the included items on the store where you plan to buy.

Post-launch content has different inclusion and pricing status: Meristation’s Spanish-language review describes the Verdadero Tormento update as free and the Mea Culpa expansion as paid, and mentions New Game+, adjustable difficulty and expanded areas. Check the relevant store listing for the current package and platform details rather than assuming every edition includes every addition. Meristation’s review coverage discusses the additions.
