Blightstone has a tactical-combat foundation that one early critic found compelling, but that review judged the difficulty and randomness punishing enough to overshadow the fun. That verdict applies to the Early Access build reviewed on January 20, 2026—not necessarily the substantially redesigned build announced on September 30, 2026. Current post-redesign balance and the final 1.0 release status are not established by the available official update.
What kind of game is Blightstone?
Blightstone is a turn-based tactical roguelike in which a party of adventurers battles the Blightstone. Its pitch centers on free movement, collectible skills, and dynamic environments, making tactical positioning and environmental hazards part of combat rather than mere scenery. Steam’s listing identifies Unfinished Pixel as the developer and Unfinished Pixel and Kepler Ghost as publishers. The listing describes the game as Early Access and gives a January 20, 2026 release date; check the live page for current availability and system requirements, which can change.
Why did an early review call the difficulty unfair?
Metacritic indexes a DualShockers PC Early Access review dated January 20, 2026. The review praised the combat and environmental hazards but criticized harsh randomness and inconsistent pacing, arguing that these could make the game feel punishing rather than instructive. Its conclusion was: “There’s something fun hidden here, but it is sadly overshadowed by a game that feels more interested in punishing you for simple things than allowing you to learn.” The indexed review does not identify an individual reviewer in the surfaced listing.
That is one critic’s assessment of an earlier build, not a settled consensus or a current measurement of difficulty. Steam hosts individual player reviews expressing different views on progression, content, difficulty, and run length; those individual comments are not a representative survey. Steam’s review section is also a changing snapshot, so it should not be treated as a fixed account of player opinion.

What changed after that review?
On September 30, 2026, developer Unfinished Pixel announced a major 0.9.0 redesign. The developer said it had reviewed player feedback and refocused the game around tactical combat, build experimentation, progression, and replayability. The update removed the Skill Tree and Ayanur Continuum Forge, simplified run setup, and added Relics. Unfinished Pixel described 0.9.0 as groundwork for version 1.0. Read the developer’s Steam announcements.
These changes are substantial enough that the January review cannot establish whether the redesigned build still feels unfair. The announcement describes the redesign, but does not establish the later build’s balance or confirm a final 1.0 release date. Treat the old review as context for the game’s earlier design, not as a verdict on the post-redesign experience.

Is Blightstone too hard, or worth trying in Early Access?
The evidence supports a cautious answer, not a simple yes or no. If the possibility of a steep learning curve and run-to-run randomness is a deal-breaker, the January review gives a reason to wait for current player feedback or clearer information about the post-redesign build. If turn-based tactical combat, environmental interactions, and experimentation with builds are what you want, those are central to the game’s stated design—but the available sources do not establish how well the new progression and difficulty work in practice.
When evaluating a current review or deciding whether to play, check whether it covers the post-0.9.0 build and its date. Then look for concrete discussion of how clearly enemy threats are communicated, whether mistakes teach useful lessons, how run pacing and progression feel, and whether environmental interactions create meaningful tactical choices. These are useful comparison questions, not measured findings about the latest build.
