There is no official top-ten summon ranking for Baldur’s Gate 3; this is an editorial ranking based on combat impact, control, durability, repeatable utility, access cost, and how well each summon fills a party role. The order is not a measured damage tier list. Availability varies by class, act, spell level, and special unlocks, so the best pick for an early party may not be the best choice for a high-level summoner.
How this ranking works
Summons compete for different resources: a character’s spell access, spell slots, actions, and room in the party plan. A level 1 familiar is relatively accessible and can offer useful abilities, while a level 5 elemental asks for a much greater investment. Some options are special unlocks rather than spells every character can learn. This ranking weighs what each summon contributes against those costs, rather than treating every creature as a direct-damage option.
The summon index is useful for surveying the field, but it does not establish an official ranking. The mechanics references below are community-maintained BG3 Wiki pages, not Larian-published tier data.
The 10 best summons in Baldur’s Gate 3
1. Air Myrmidon

Why it ranks first: It represents the level 6 upgrade to a spell that already provides an elemental ally, making it a strong choice when a high-level caster wants to devote a slot to a more formidable combat presence. The upgrade changes the summoned creature to a myrmidon rather than merely increasing a number on the base elemental.
Access and cost: Conjure Elemental is a level 5 spell; casting it at level 6 summons a corresponding myrmidon. That requires access to the spell and a level 6 slot. See the Conjure Elemental reference for the spell’s forms and mechanics.
Best fit: A high-level party that can afford the slot and wants an additional combatant. It is less practical when the party needs lower-cost utility or cannot spare a level 6 spell slot.
2. Shovel
What it contributes: A distinctive familiar with invisibility and the ability to scare enemies.
Why it ranks here: Its utility is not limited to trading attacks. Invisibility can support scouting and positioning, while the scare ability gives it a control role that a simple low-level familiar might not provide.
Access and cost: Shovel is a special familiar unlocked through a scroll and dialogue route, not a generic Find Familiar option. The summoning guide describes its unlock route. Familiar options are mutually exclusive for a character, so account for that when planning which familiar to field; the Find Familiar reference explains the spell and its variants.
Best fit: Players who value scouting and disruption as well as combat presence. Its special unlock means it is not universally available.
3. Water Myrmidon
What it contributes: A level 6-cast myrmidon form of Conjure Elemental.
Why it ranks here: It offers the same important upgrade in summon category as the other myrmidons: a stronger-form option for parties investing a top-level slot in an elemental ally. Its position reflects that combat investment, while keeping the choice distinct from the base water elemental.
Access and cost: Cast Conjure Elemental at level 6 to summon the corresponding myrmidon. The spell’s base level is 5; the higher slot is the price of this form. Consult the spell reference for details.

Best fit: A high-level caster who wants to add a combatant and can spend a level 6 slot. Choose among myrmidon forms according to the role your party needs rather than assuming one is universally superior.
4. Earth Myrmidon
What it contributes: The earth-aligned myrmidon option from a level 6 casting of Conjure Elemental.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why it ranks here: As with the other myrmidons, it is a high-investment combat summon rather than a low-cost helper. Its ranking rewards the level 6 upgrade while avoiding unsupported claims that it has a specific damage advantage over the other forms.
Access and cost: Conjure Elemental is a level 5 spell, and casting at level 6 produces the corresponding myrmidon. The exact level requirement and form should be checked against the spell reference.
Best fit: Parties looking for a dedicated additional combat presence at high level. The level 6 slot makes it a poor default where spell-slot economy matters more than extra battlefield presence.
5. Fire Myrmidon
What it contributes: The fire myrmidon, available through the level 6 version of Conjure Elemental.
Why it ranks here: It is another way to turn a high-level spell investment into an upgraded elemental ally. The evidence supports distinguishing it from the level 5 fire elemental, but does not establish comparative damage rankings among the myrmidons.
Access and cost: The level 5 spell Conjure Elemental summons a base elemental; cast at level 6, it summons a corresponding myrmidon. See the spell mechanics.
Best fit: A caster who can spare a level 6 slot and wants an additional combatant. The choice between elemental forms should follow the encounter and party’s needs, not a supposed universal damage ranking.
6. Scratch
What it contributes: Help and search utility, giving this special familiar value beyond direct combat.

- Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear

- Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.
Why it ranks here: A summon that can assist and help discover things can repay its place in the party even when raw damage is not the goal. That broader utility makes Scratch an appealing pick for players who prize exploration and support.
Access and cost: Scratch is a special unlock associated with his ball, rather than a standard familiar selected from Find Familiar. The summoning guide covers the relevant access condition.
Best fit: Players who want a unique utility companion. Scratch and Shovel are distinct unlocks, not interchangeable variants obtained through the same source.
7. Air Elemental
What it contributes: A base elemental summon from the level 5 Conjure Elemental spell.
Why it ranks here: It lets a party field an elemental without spending the level 6 slot required for a myrmidon. That makes it a more accessible high-level combat option, though its form is not the level 6 upgrade.
Access and cost: Conjure Elemental is a level 5 spell and offers fire, earth, water, or air elementals. A level 6 cast instead summons the corresponding myrmidon. The spell page distinguishes these options.
Best fit: A party that wants an elemental ally but prefers to conserve a level 6 slot. The level 5 spell still requires substantial character and spell investment.
8. Us
What it contributes: A special summon with a later-access condition rather than a broadly available spell choice.
Recommended Free Tools
Why it ranks here: Its inclusion reflects the value of unique summons in a list that considers access and party options, not just spellbook availability. The available reference identifies a later access condition but does not establish a comparative performance advantage over the higher-ranked choices.
Access and cost: Us becomes available later under a specific condition; consult the summoning guide for that condition. Its availability is therefore dependent on how the player progresses.
Rank #4
Best fit: A player who meets the unlock condition and wants a special summon. Do not plan around it as though it were a standard spell available from the start.
9. Find Familiar options
What they contribute: Low-level familiar choices with distinct utility, making them useful for players who want a summon without committing to a high-level spell slot.
Why they rank here: They are the most accessible category in this list, but their value depends on the familiar’s function rather than hit points alone. Their lower combat investment makes them useful in a different way from elementals.
Access and cost: Find Familiar is a level 1 conjuration spell. A character can have only one familiar variant at a time, so the choice is exclusive for that character. See the Find Familiar reference for variants and mechanics.
Best fit: Players seeking a lower-cost utility option or a familiar that complements their party. This entry covers the spell’s ordinary variants, not special unlocks such as Scratch or Shovel.
10. Deva
What it contributes: A high-level planar summon, notable for being a specialized option rather than an early-game companion.

Why it ranks here: Planar Ally broadens the summon roster for a party that has reached the late game, but its access requirements make it less broadly useful than more available options. The reference supports its act and spell-slot restrictions, not a measured superiority claim.
Access and cost: The Deva spell has an Act 3 and spell-slot requirement, according to the summoning guide. Check the spell’s current requirements before building around it.
Best fit: A late-game party able to meet the spell requirements and looking for a planar ally. It is not a practical choice for parties that have not reached the relevant act or cannot access the spell.

- Best low-cost familiar utility: Find Familiar’s level 1 options, with the specific variant chosen for function. A character can field only one familiar variant at a time.
- Best special familiar utility: Shovel for invisibility and scare utility, if you unlock the required scroll and dialogue route.
- Best exploration-oriented special summon: Scratch for Help and search utility, if you obtain his ball.
- Best high-level elemental investment: A myrmidon from a level 6 casting of Conjure Elemental; use the level 5 cast for a base elemental when conserving the higher slot.
- Best late-game planar option: Deva, if you meet the Act 3 and spell-slot requirements.
These are role-based recommendations, not test results: no comparative summon win rates or damage averages establish a single objectively best creature. For broader reference, the summoning guide inventories summon routes and categories, while individual spell pages explain the mechanics of Find Familiar and Conjure Elemental.
