You can manually check for a Minecraft update, but there is no single force-update button that works on every device. Use the Minecraft Launcher for Java Edition, or the store or console update controls for the platform where you installed the game.
Update Minecraft on your device
First identify your edition and platform: Java Edition uses the Minecraft Launcher, while Minecraft for Windows, mobile, consoles and Fire TV use their respective store or game-management controls. Minecraft’s official update instructions cover the platform-specific paths below; menu labels can change.
Java Edition on PC or Mac
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Beside the Play button, open the version selector.
- Select Latest Release, then start the game.
The launcher should show the latest release automatically. Selecting Latest Release is the manual step if it is showing another version.
Minecraft for Windows
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get Updated to check for app updates, including Minecraft.
iPhone, iPad and Android
Minecraft normally updates automatically on mobile, according to Minecraft Help. To check manually, open the App Store or Google Play, find Minecraft and use the store’s update control if one is available.

Xbox
- Open My Apps & Games and select Minecraft.
- Open More options, then Manage game & add-ons.
- Choose Updates and install an available update.
In this Xbox update flow, an empty update list means the game is fully updated.
PlayStation 4
If automatic updates are disabled, highlight Minecraft, press Options and choose Check for Update. The cited Minecraft instructions specify PS4; menu wording may differ on other PlayStation interfaces.

Nintendo Switch
Use the instructions for the edition installed. Minecraft’s official page describes starting the older Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition to reach a prompt for the newer Minecraft, or finding Minecraft in the eShop. Those directions concern the older Switch-edition context, so do not assume the same steps apply to every current Switch setup.
Fire TV
Find Minecraft in the Store, open its More Info screen and choose Update if that button appears.

Check whether the update installed
On iPhone, iPad and Android, open Minecraft and read the version number at the bottom-right of the launch screen. Minecraft Help says it should match the version in the game’s store listing. On other platforms, compare the installed version with the platform’s current listing if you need to confirm whether you have the latest version.

A missing update is not, by itself, proof that the installation is broken. Xbox’s instructions treat an empty update list as confirmation that the game is up to date. The cited guidance does not establish the cause of a missing update on every other platform; if the installed version and store listing disagree, consult that platform’s current support instructions.
