Yes—but only temporarily through the official Minecraft: Java Edition trial. It provides about 100 minutes of in-game play, not a permanent free copy. For ongoing play, you need an eligible active subscription or the Java & Bedrock Edition for PC purchase.
What does the free Minecraft Java trial include?
Minecraft’s official free-trial page offers Java Edition trial downloads for Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux, with options listed for Debian-based and Arch-based Linux as well. You download the trial, sign in or create a Microsoft account, and launch it.
The trial includes the core Survival experience: crafting, exploration, and combat. Minecraft says it lasts approximately 100 minutes of in-game time—about five in-game days—and notes that the exact duration may vary slightly by device. That is game playtime, not 100 minutes measured by a clock while the game is open.
What are the trial’s multiplayer limits?
You can play offline, and LAN multiplayer is allowed. You cannot join online multiplayer servers during the trial. Minecraft also says the trial’s default player name cannot be changed.

#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
What can you do after the trial ends?
The trial is not a permanent license. To keep playing without that trial limit, choose one of these access routes:
| Route | Duration and cost model | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Official trial | Free, limited to approximately 100 minutes of in-game play; duration may vary slightly by device (Minecraft, trial page). | Includes core Survival play, offline play, and LAN multiplayer; online servers are disabled. |
| Xbox Game Pass | Subscription access; an active subscription is required (Minecraft Support, launcher troubleshooting FAQ). | Check your current plan’s catalog and availability in your region. The cited support information does not establish which current plans or regions include Java Edition. |
| Java & Bedrock Edition for PC | Purchase; the retrieved official store information does not state a stable current price. | Minecraft’s PC store page identifies the product as including both Java and Bedrock editions. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
Is Game Pass a way to get Java for free?
Not permanently: Game Pass is subscription access, and play requires an active subscription. Minecraft Support recommends signing the Launcher into the Microsoft account used to buy Minecraft and checking or renewing Game Pass when relevant. Because plan and country entitlements can differ or change, confirm Java Edition appears in your own subscription’s current catalog before relying on it.

Does a Minecraft Realms trial include Java Edition?
No. Realms is a separate online hosting subscription, not a free license for Minecraft: Java Edition. Minecraft’s Realms page advertises a 30-day trial for eligible users and says the subscription automatically renews unless canceled. A Realms trial should not be mistaken for a trial or permanent free copy of the game.
