There is no supported, up-to-date universal ranking of the “best” Firmware, and the available official sources do not establish a complete current catalog of every Firmware set and ability effect. This guide explains the confirmed mechanics, how to judge a bonus for your build, and a concrete late-game example without presenting launch-era information as a current list.

What Firmware does
Firmware adds set bonuses to gear. In its August 29, 2025 endgame announcement, 2K says that players first encounter Firmware during the campaign and that acquiring more matching Firmware increases the bonus. The announcement also says every rank of Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM) includes exclusive Firmware.
The official description establishes the increasing-bonus rule, but not a complete current list of set thresholds, values, eligible gear slots, or transfer costs. Check the item and Firmware details in your current game rather than assuming an older guide’s numbers still apply.

How to transfer Firmware—and what it costs
2K describes Firmware as transferable once to another item. The original item is destroyed during the transfer, so treat the item carrying the bonus as a one-use donor—not as a reusable way to move the bonus between gear later.
- Identify the item carrying the Firmware you want and the item you intend to transfer it to.
- Compare the donor item’s other value to your build. If you still need its weapon, gear, or other properties, losing the item may outweigh the benefit of moving the bonus.
- Use the game’s Firmware transfer option and review the on-screen confirmation carefully. Confirm only when you accept the donor item’s destruction and one-time transfer.
The official description does not specify a separate currency or material cost, nor does it detail every eligible source and destination slot. Follow the current in-game menu for those specifics.

How Vault Hunter abilities fit together
Abilities are not a single interchangeable bonus category. Gearbox Creative Director Graeme Timmins described the design in a PlayStation Blog post on April 30, 2025: each Vault Hunter has three signature abilities that serve as Action Skills. Players can develop those skills with augments and capstones, while branching skill-tree paths provide passive abilities. Each Hunter also has a unique Trait that shapes how their kit works.
Vex illustrates the distinction: her Trait attunes her Action Skills to the element of her currently equipped weapon. A Trait, an Action Skill, a passive, and an augment can all affect a build, but they are different parts of it. Movement abilities such as gliding, dashing, double-jumping, and point-grappling are also part of the game’s movement toolkit; do not assume each one is an Action Skill or a Firmware effect.

These are orientation points, not rankings or substitutes for the current skill descriptions. Gearbox’s later balance notes show that individual abilities and skills can change, so choose based on the live effects and your intended playstyle.
Skillcraft: a confirmed late-game Firmware example
Gearbox’s official update notes, published December 8, 2025 and updated July 2, 2026, identify Skillcraft as Firmware available only in UVHM 6. They list these tier effects:

The notes describe Skillcraft’s tiers as making Action Skills more dangerous. The exact Tier 3 text says “Skill Damage,” so use the current in-game tooltip to determine how a particular effect interacts with that wording rather than assuming every damage source qualifies.

- Damage source: Check whether the bonus names gun, melee, splash, Ordnance, Skill, or Action Skill damage. A bonus to one source may not improve another.
- Trigger and uptime: Note whether the effect is always active or depends on a kill, critical hit, health threshold, reload, or another condition. For timed or stacking effects, account for the duration, stack limit, and how reliably your build can maintain them.
- Survivability and utility: Weigh healing, lifesteal, damage reduction, shielding, crowd control, or movement against the damage you would gain. The right trade depends on what currently limits your build.
- Build compatibility: Match the effect to your Hunter’s Trait, chosen Action Skill, passives, augments, weapon setup, and the gear you can equip.
- Acquisition and donor cost: Account for UVHM rank restrictions and the destruction of the original item when deciding whether a transfer is worth it.
For Skillcraft specifically, a build that deals Skill Damage repeatedly may be better positioned to use its Tier 3 stacking effect than one that cannot keep the effect active. That is a conditional fit, not proof that Skillcraft is universally superior to another set.
Are old Firmware and ability lists still reliable?
Insider Gaming’s September 19, 2025 launch-era guide counted 21 Firmware sets and tabulated effects at one, two, and three pieces. That is a dated secondary-source snapshot, not an official current total or proof that the table remains complete after updates. Treat its count and values as historical unless you verify each entry in the current game.
Later official notes document balance changes: Gearbox’s January 29, 2026 update adjusted Specializations and Harlowe’s Zero-Point skill, among other changes. The April 30, 2026 Version 1.6 notes describe ongoing Action Skill and skill-tree balancing and list changes involving C4SH, Amon, Vex, Rafa, and Harlowe skills and class mods. For a live build, prioritize the current tooltip and newest official patch notes over a launch guide or an older skill explanation.
